Default sorting for Member List
To honor the top contributors, the Member List should be sorted by Reputation as default (highest first). Currently it is sorted by User Name and that is not helpful as on top of the page there is already a list of alphabet for jumping.

Re: Default sorting for Member List
And if Brad decides to retire reps system what the sort order should be then?
I think it makes a whole lot of sence not to change anything what so ever - it only takes one click to get list resorted.
... my 2c ...

Very smart question!!!
Perhaps what if Brad decides to shut down VBForums?

Re: Default sorting for Member List
It sounds like you are not aware that reps system is Brad's idea so there is always a slight chance that it [reps] may go away.
That is why I asked you that question.

Re: Default sorting for Member List
Sorry to butt into the thread, but how long has the rep system been on vbforums? I have been reading on a couple threads lately snippets about the rep system, and how some people don't like it.

Re: Default sorting for Member List
As I recall it was introduced late 2004 or early 2005 after major forum upgrade.
Back to OP's original idea: it will make more sense [if different sort order is considered] to sort on posts count rather than reps count.

Re: Default sorting for Member List
Reps were turned on in Feb of 2004 (had my run of 4+ years at the top) so I remember when it was turned on. Actually there is a post on it too.
Changing the sort order would [Insert usual comment about not modifying source code or templates] and at the next upgrade would require reapplying and complications if the code changes etc.
I think the honer members get with reps and postcounts shows in their postbit specs in every post. The member list is fine as is but if we had a dashboard as the home page then a block could be added to show top ten posters or reps etc.

relax, we would never hack the templates for something like that. It's far too minor when just click sorts in any way you like.

Nope, much later than that - it definitely happened after I joined.
See this thread from late 2004.

Re: Default sorting for Member List
Well actually it was officially turned on here - Jan 21, 2005 http://www.vbforums.com/showthread.php?t=321171
I was thinking of 4 years running and I only dropped to #2 the other month so it was early 2005. Damn time sure flies lol

I didn't know if that is difficult. I know it is just a click but an unnecessary click.
I just see the current sorting order is not useful so just raise an idea to make it as a hall of fame. I wish I can remove this thread.

Re: Default sorting for Member List
it's not merely a question of difficulty, the default sorting should be alphabetical. For example, those like you who would be interested in post totals, would probably only be interested in the first couple of pages, whereas those searching for somebody by username, would then have to sort on every page they click, because once the default sort is changed, it's changed for every page.

Re: Default sorting for Member List
Thanks Rob. I know how to do that (as it is simple enough) and that is not my intention when I put up this thread.
My idea was if simple enough, to make the Member List also become something likes "the Hall of Fame" by changing the default sorting order. You guys perhaps did not catch my thought.

Re: Default sorting for Member List
Yes we did but as mentioned its not really feasible. I know you know how to get the links but was only a suggested work-around as other members may not know how to get the links.
