Forum Upgrade and Post Counts
This is a notice to everyone to let you know we are now officially considering an upgrade to version 3.0 of this forum's software. This is a huge upgrade and will have a very notable impact on this site's look and operation. This will include the addition of a number of features and more customizations.
Be aware that along with the upgrade, we will be running maintenance on the threads, users, and other items on the site. If you have had deleted posts, then this may impact your post count slightly. Additionally, if you had a manual change to your post count (a few of these were done after the crash that occurred before Jupitermedia media arrived (summer 2002?)), then those numbers will also be lost.
Post counts and thread counts will reflect what is currently in the database and system.
Many of you have been asking for this upgrade for quite a while. The Jupitermedia developers are currently testing the migration to the new version specifically for VBForums, so the "ball is rolling". I plan to get involved with this starting today.
Brad!

Nice.....looking forward to it.....just one Q. Can you make sure we will keep the avatar and "profile" to the left and not OVER the actual post?
Ohhh one more. Will there be any voting system (give points to users) in the new one?
Thanks

The great debate -- names to the left or above. We'll have to see how that works out. The Jupitermedia default is to put the names above as it makes the posts easier to read. (less scrunching)
As to "reputations" -- which is the rating system -- it is supported in version 3.0. We will implement that, however, after the upgrade is done and going smoothly.

Thanks for your answers. Now that ChitChat is a bit more serious. Maybe I can set up a poll there and see what the rest of the members says about the "profile".
Thanks

Does anyone know a site in which the names and avatars are above the posts? I don't think I've seen this before

It is the people in the Visual Basic forums whose opinions would make more sense. But-- at this time I don't want those forums (VB) distracted with such a poll. After all, we will model the forum for the technical discussions, not the chit chat .

Thanks.
That's interesting - It's not as bad as I'd imagined, but I definately prefer it the way it is currently

Well since you would probably have moved the thread and banned me for life if I posted it in the VB section I didn't feel that I had any choice. You are free to set up one there your self, or move mine....

At first I thouhgt I would care.... now that I've seen it in action.... as long as there is space between the posts (I've seen some where it's all slammed together and it becomes difficult to tell who wrote what) I'm feeling ambivilent about it.

Is there any way we can "preview" what our postcounts will end up as?
hmmm,...
Selecting search under this post, I find 4426 total posts.
Going to the "Search" button on top, entering my username, and specifically searching ChitChat, returning all posts as posts, I find 2552 chit chat posts.
Assuming ChitChat posts are the only ones that don't count, I subtract 2552 from 4426, and get {doublecheck with calculater}, hmmm, 1874.
I seem to be off by 76.
Where else do Posts not count????

Brad, it would be good if you did get the general feeling for the great debate:
Above or Left.
You could make an announcement and post a poll here, so that everyone can vote. It'll be like Bush vs Kerry all over again.

I sure hope we do have a poll about this potential upgrade.
I like the current version, but I see that there are a few
improvements that I like.
I like our current layout (left) and how would the Reputation
work? Everyone starts out one green box?

Reputations (individual ratings) get somewhat complex -- thus while we will leave it alone until after we do the upgrade. After the upgrade, I'll post explanations and such on how it works and what the rules to making it effective are.
Some of the details will have to be hammered out by the moderators before it is launched as well.
Again though -- let's leave the reputation discussions alone until after the upgrade. And yes, I do plan to activate reputations.

Just vote in my poll in the ChitChat part untill Brad finds it convinient (when it is the right time to think about it), he will look at it, and maybe post his own poll.

Yeah, above doesn't look all that nice. I hated it when they changed it to above on one other recently upgraded forum. You can get used to it, but to my sharp visual eye it doesn't look as nice. That solution would've been understandable when everyone had 640x480 and 800x600 resolutions, not when we have 1280 x 1024 by average like I have.
Edit Btw, does the upgrade fix the problem you can't see "subscribed" threads if you don't want the mail? I have disabled the mailing, thus I'm not getting subscribed to any topics, and thus it is harder for me to find the topics I've been talking in. Searching is such a bother

Yes there is now an option which allows you to subscribe to threads without getting notifications by mail. It also offers a few other options like send only one notification out Daily or weekly instead of instant .

When we upgrade, will the forum be down for a while, to switch or copy or move or what ever the database, or will it just happen with a blink of an eye? If so, do anyone know for about how long, or about when it will happend? LIke in a week, or in a month or...?

I've updated the announcement. I've been told it could take a couple of hours (like 3). We are targeting a time when traffic is a bit lower, so as to impact the fewest people.
Some of the steps (such as updating the search index and counters will be done after the initial migration and while the site is up and running. (Which means search will be off for the first 24 hours or so on the new site).

5:30 EST (AM/PM ?). Its 3 hours ahead of my time zone (2:30). So
I hope its AM because by the time I get to work it should be up
and running.
Although, PM usually has allot less traffic then AM. Mondays
especially have the most traffice of the week too.

I would think that they would do it after-hours, which would be PM. We'll find out, I guess.

I'm not sure 5:30 PM would count as after hours. It'd be a pretty busy time too. But then, 5:30 AM would mean that they have to wake up bright and extremely early for the upgrade and bard might spill coffee on the server or something.

Not like this has anything to do with the upgrade...
I've noticed that if you GOOGLE and come up with links back to this forum that sometimes they connect to totally incoherent threads and pages.
What's up with that? Is it about to get completely worse?
Just curious...

On GOOGLE, search for "Sql srv 2000 column positions"
You get this search page:
Search results
First link goes to a completely unrelated spot.

Its because it only index's the forum index's and not the threads, or at least didn't used to. So the cached version will show that a thread with a title similar to that did exist when the page was viewed by google last .
