My point was that Microsoft began to push people away from VBA beginning with Office 2003.
Well I think that's just wrong. Generally you needed the Office Runtime components, which only came as part of the Developer SKUs - at least in ealier versions of Office. Otherwise you might create add-ins or other DLLs, but not stand-alone applications that don't require Office to be installed.
Office has to be installed whether you use an Office Developer product, or automate Office via, say, VB.
