Question Too many ads getting displayed on Chrome.

I am using Chrome with a specific "Do not track setting". I am logged into the website, but the amount of ads that I have to see are staggering. For every second or third link I click, I see an ad that occupies the entire page.

Is this behavior due to the settings I have configured?

It's part of the site.... The ads run in different order.. You might be able to go days without seeing them again.

Re: Too many ads getting displayed on Chrome.

For the big ads that overlay, you should not see THE SAME ad on the SAME DAY more than once. You might see more than one ad on the same day, but it should be different ads. If anyone is seeing more than 3 of these on the same day, please let me know and I'll complain for all of us. I've noticed that they are coming up quite a bit, but there are supposed to be a limit on them.

The exception to this is if you have cookies turned off. You have to have cookies turned on in order to have the flag set that says you've seen an ad today.

I'll have to pay more attention. The full-page ad often comes up several times in a row for me, but I haven't noticed whether or not it is the same each time, and I haven't counted the actual instances.

I've gotten as many as 4 of them - each different - within an hour... within minutes in fact... then I hit my settings page to see subscribed threads... when I then went to one of those threads... again when I hit back to back to the subscription list, then again (that made 3) when I went to another thread, and again (for #4) when I when back to my subscription page... then the process repeated again about an hour later when I did the same thing, but from a different computer.

edit - rather I should mention that they are not the EXACT same ad... but they may be variations from the same company/campaign.

Cookies are at the machine/browser level, so you are going to see the ads again if you go to a different browser or if you go to a different machine. Different cookies get stored for each of those.

On the same browser on the same machine, there should be a daily limit. I'm following up to see what the settings currently are.

I am seeing a lot of ads also. So starting with Subscriptions, where one popped up, I got another one at forums home, then one at the forum feedback, and lastly before this thread. That is four in seconds, which IMHO is too many.

What's changed is that they have sold those big ("Welcome") ads. They've been here before and I believe there have been comments about them before as well. The timing just happens to match the other change. Lucky me.

I am working to have them reduce the number of times you see the welcome ads when you get here. It should be once or twice at most. I'm working to try to have it be no more than once an hour. They are looking into this, so hopefully they will make a chance within the next 24 hours.

Just letting you know that this isn't affecting everyone. I only see the large welcome ads once a day max.

I'm using Chrome and I live in Canada.

I saw it twice in a row today, the second one just after I navigated to a page after the one that invoked the first. Never seem it do that before.

Re: Too many ads getting displayed on Chrome.

I ONLY got the ad twice today. That's down from the 3-4 in the past days. Therefore, if that's the result of the change, it's a good one.

Now, they need to change who they are selling to. One of the ads was from Rackspace, about which I have no opinion, as that's not what I do, but another company in that area is GoDaddy, who has made some more....visually appealing...ads. Kind of like what Niya would do if he ran an ad agency.

What would do if we didn't have vbforums to complain about

I also seem to get that big full-screen ad over and over again and then not at all for a long stretch.

You should not see that big ad more than 2 times in an hour. If you do, let me know.

OT, but I just read this as:
