Resolved [RESOLVED] Anyone keep poultry (or bees)?

After reading "Made by hand" I am intrigued by making my garden a bit more productive. Anyone know about keeping either poultry (I'm thinking small ones such as guinea fowl or quail) or bees can share thoughts/tips?

Be sure and check with your city rules and regulation before stating

There sure is tons of info out there.. What would you raise the birds for - eat em or for the eggs? You'd need a lot of Quails for either.

I did chickens in a prior life. Had 5 of them - in a coop that led into a small yard. The entire yard covered in a chicken wire cage that even went under the dirt - several inches down.

Need to keep chickens in and vermin out.

    Got fresh eggs every day.

They were dirty - they smelled - and getting feed was a pita.

Btw - be clear in that "dirty" means you have to clean it...

Technically I suppose I do keep free-range bumble bees :-) (They only provide background sounds of spring - no actual honey)

Yeah, used to. Never again. Chicken honey is HORRIBLE!

Re: Anyone keep poultry (or bees)?

I've been visited by a poultrygeist twice last year. The first time, five chickens showed up in my yard. To this day, I have no idea where they came from other than a note written in spanish using crayon about asking me to take the chickens so they don't get killed (I gave them to my neighbor, who sold them or ate them). A month or so after that, a duck decided to nest beneath a spruce tree in my yard. I put out water and corn for her, though she seemed rather ungrateful and got all huffy whenever I came around. Kind of useless, her being huffy, since mallards are so utterly defenseless, but she did her best.

It was an interesting year. My back yard was rather fowl, at times.

My wife is back from her long weekend away so I now have adult supervision and guidance again. Therefore I can mark this as resolved (I'm told)
