I get it very occassionally and only as a "one-off" rather than a repeated experience. Even then it's pretty terrifying so you have my sympathy if it's chronic for you.

I have also tried to take up running, but running is not fun for me
I tried all sorts of exercises and none of them stuck until I found climbing. Now I'm fit as a fiddle and it doesn't feel like I'm "exercising" at all. I think the secret is to find an reasonably physical activity you enjoy doing for it's own sake. Getting fit then comes as a pleasant side effect.
