EAN 13 barcode scanning
I have an inventory system running in a retail outlet where all items and its EAN 13 codes are stored in the DB. SO when an item barcode is scanned curresponding item details are shown in the screen.
But the Grocery items does not have EAN codes. but when a grocery is weighed using the weighing scale it generates a Barcode in 13 digit EAN format. and it will contain the itemcode, weight, rate etc.. in the barcode itself. ie each time it may have different barcodes generated for the same item. Now i need to identify if the item is a real EAN 13 code or generated from the weighing scale. so that i can interpret the item details correctly.
Could anyone help me to idenntify the general practice followed for this? I could not find any info by searching google
Thanks

Really? So, this webpage is a ghost? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Interna...mber_%28EAN%29
Oh, and since i'm in a good mood i'll give you a hint: Take a look at the GS1 Prefix and/or Company Number

Re: EAN 13 barcode scanning
I read this article before puting the query. And i also found the GS1 preix of2 or 3 digits representing the country code. May be you did not get what i am asking. I was asking if there is any standard to identify if the code is generated for the weighing items (generally grocery) or from a standared EAN item. for eg: the weighing scale generates a 13 digit barcode for 1 kg apple. and it will generate a different barcode for 2 kg apple. This scenario i came across many customers but could not find an apt solution for that. So i was wondering if there is a particular standard being followed . Thanks though..
Also the wiegh scale vendor says they use the first 2 digits to identify if the item is weighable or countable item.

Re: EAN 13 barcode scanning
And i think you haven't read the Article
The 200-299 country code is worth a special mention; most GS1 member organizations define this as being available for retailer internal use (or internal use by other types of business). Some retailers use this for proprietary (own brand or unbranded) products (although many retailers obtain their own manufacturer's code for their own brands); some retailers use at least part of this prefix for products which are packaged in store, for example, items weighed and served over a counter for a customer. The barcode may encode a price, quantity or weight along with a product identifier (in a retailer defined way); the product identifier may be one assigned by the Produce Electronic Identification Board or may be retailer assigned. Retailers who have historically used UPC barcodes will tend to use GS1 prefixes 04 (for products) and 02 (for store packaged products) in a similar way.
