Unhappy Wireless internet USB not working in Ubuntu

    Hello everyone,

I just intalled Ubuntu 10.04 LTS but I don't have any internet while using it. I think that Ubuntu doesn't recognize wireless internet USB (Crypto Airdata 1.50 mini USB). I went to Ralink's (the company that made the drivers for my USB) site but there weren't any drivers for Ubuntu. Can anyone tell me how can I make Ubuntu recognize my wireless internet USB?

the short and painful answer is write drivers yourself. Otherwise you are screwed. If no one has written a driver for it, you aren't going to get it to work, period.

But I don't know how to develop programs in Ubuntu. This is my first time using them on my pc and I haven't got any previous experience. Also, I want to have internet in Ubuntu because all the programs I want to install on them come from the internet.

Get another wireless nic that is supported in Linux is your easiest option.

Yes, but I don't know which wireless internet USB's are supported in Ubuntu and also I don't have any money at the moment so I can't afford buying a second USB.

Maybe I should dig up my old wireless network card...

Any mainstream nic should be OK... By saying mainstream, I mean nics that are made by well recognized manufaturers such as Linksys, Intel... And while wireless connectivity is convenient, it's not reliable. If you can run a cat5 cable to where your computer is, consider it because it's not only way more reliable, a wired nic is very cheap these days.

Yes, I have considered using Ethernet, but, while my PC is on the second floor, my router is on the first floor! I can't just use a cable! The router is at least 20 Meters away from my PC!

You could consider a powerline kit.
But you'd still be off cheaper with a linksys wireless adapter.
Delete it. They just clutter threads anyway.

You should be able to use the Windows driver through NDISwrapper.

TheBigB: Yes, but, no money = no new equipment.

Lord_Orwell: No I can't because there are other computers on the first floor in my house using ethernet.

tr333: I downloaded NDISwrapper from sourceforge.net but I don't know how to install it. In the instructions it says to run some commands but I don't know how to do that.

EDIT: I changed my mind and uninstalled Ubuntu because I thought "What should I do with them!?"

You don't install from sourceforge.net. NDISwrapper is available in the Ubuntu repositories. You can install ndisgtk to get a GUI program for configuring NDISwrapper.

NDis Wrapper will be your best bet. I used it when I was having difficulties. At a push here.... if you connect to the internet over ethernet, do an apt-get update, apt-get upgrade and see if that fixes it it. If not try going to the Administration panel and selecting hardware drivers and seeing if there is anything relevant there?

Re: Wireless internet USB not working in Ubuntu

have you considered running ubuntu in a virtual machine inside windows?

also a lot of wireless devices share a common chipset. If you are able to determine your device's chipset, you may be able to find a driver for ubuntu that way. I've seen in the past drivers listed this way. In fact ubuntu has a driver for a software tuner card i have, and it is listed by chipset, not brand, since the exact same chip is in 5 or 6 different vendors. Interesting sidenote: I have the msi version and i managed to get a software update program for a different vendor to update msi's installed software! Odd.

Or buy a wireless-to-ethernet adapter. Or if you have a Vista laptop that supports wireless connectivity and you keep it upstairs, just 1) turn your laptop on 2) turn your computer on 3) connect your computer's Ethernet to your laptop's Ethernet port, 4) connect your laptop to your wireless network (if it is not already) 5) On your laptop go to Network Connections 6) Ctrl-click your Ethernet adapter and wireless adapter 7) Right-click your wireless and hit "Bridge Connections" in the drop-down menu. At this point, Windows will work on connecting the Ethernet port to your wireless. If that went well, you should see a connection to the Internet from your computer.

    To connect to the Internet:

    1.Open System → Administration → Networking.
2.Select the connection you wish to use, then click Properties.
3.Ensure Enable this connection is turned on.
4.If your ISP or network administrator has given you an IP address, set Configuration to Static IP address, then enter the address in the IP address field and click OK. Otherwise, set Configuration to DHCP and click OK.
5.To activate or deactivate network connections, select your connection, then click Activate/Deactivate.

If you have a static IP then ubuntu really won't care about that, nor should it. You will be going through a router. It is the routers job to worry about whether or not it is a static IP. For an internal IP address this may help. But it is irrelevant for an external one.

Also, what is with the link?

I bought this from eBay: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...m=130397652965

I use it on Windows XP, 2003 and Ubuntu 10.04LTS. There are drivers for each OS. It came quick too.
