    Re: Virtual PC 32 bit

No! You can't do that because the platform wouldn't be able to handle the resources needed to run the 64bit Operating System.

So, what should I need to install 64 bit OS in my virtual PC? My host OS is 32 bit w2k8 server and I dont want to rebuild it.

    Re: Virtual PC 32 bit

You can't! You need a 64bit host to run a 64bit virtual pc which, then can handle both 64bit/32bit software.

Can you virtualize a 64bit OS on 32bit host OS? suggests VMWare can do this if the actual CPU supports 64-bit software.

    Re: Virtual PC 32 bit

But that means popski would have to rebuild his comp to run the VMWare server instead of his current win2k 32Bit server, which he's already stated.
Currently using VS 2015 Enterprise on Win10 Enterprise x64.

No "rebuild" required, just install VMWare Server as far as I know.

dilettante is correct. I use Win 7, and installed VMware Server 2.0.2.
It installs some services that are on all the time, and the virtual machine runs in the background (unlike MS Virtual PC where it opens a window).

Here is a print screen of my Win7 running XP as a virtual machine, on a dual monitor: image here

Cool! Although, that page doesn't seem to have any info on how the product actually works? Popskie might be using Virtual PC rather than VMWare.

Hmm. I guess I didn't phrase it right. Let's try this again:

Maybe if the OP used VMWare instead of Virtual PC this would accomplish what was requested.

    Re: Virtual PC 32 bit

Unless something has changed very recently, Virtual PC doesn't support 64-bit guests period, regardless of the host. I use VirtualBox (formerly Sun, now Oracle) for 64-bit guests.

Yep, VirtualBox here too, running XP, Vista 32bit, W7 32 and 64 versions. Runs like a charm (especially after installing Guest Additions).

can vbox run windows-7/64 as a guset on 32b host ?

last time i tried to run windows7 64 on vista 32, with vbox, it didn't work for me.

i have a lenovo laptop, and i think the cpu can run 64 os,
so there is no problem from the cpu side.

anyway i should try dillanete suggestion of course.

EDIT: i just checked vmware, i run the indicator utilty,
it says that it can't run 64 guests on my cpu.

from the pdf, i saw that only few cpu supported

my cpu can run 64 instructions http://ark.intel.com/Product.aspx?id=35583
    but not supported on vmware

    Re: Virtual PC 32 bit

This thread will answer why you can't run 64 bit guests, but probably can 64 bit hosts http://forums.virtualbox.org/viewtop...=15516&start=0

In short, the CPU does not support 64bit virtualization, as I understood it.

In regards to a general support of 64bit guests on 32bit hosts, this article suggests that it is possible http://geekswithblogs.net/twickers/a...06/129243.aspx

I use VirtualBox on three machines.

    1. MSI laptop with an Intel 32bit CPU running Windows 7 as host and XP as guest, both 32bit.
    2. AMD X2 64bit desktop running Windows 7 as host, with Windows 7 and XP as guests, all three 32bit.
    3. iMac 27, running Mac OS X as host, and Windows 7 64bit and Vista and XP (last two 32bit) as guests.

    .
thank you very much for the information.
i guess your intel cpu has vt hareware.
    mine, not.

when i have the time, maybe i'll try with linux-64 as host.

    Re: Virtual PC 32 bit

Checking the FAQs on VMWare Server, it seems clear:
What does 64-bit operating system support mean?
It means that 64-bit guest operating systems will run on supported 64-bit hardware independent of the type of host operating system.

Refer to the following table for supported combinations.

    Code:
Host OS 32-bit Guest OS 64-bit Guest OS
32-bit CPU 32-bit Host OS Supported Unsupported
                      64-bit Host OS Unsupported Unsupported
64-bit CPU 32-bit Host OS Supported Supported
                      64-bit Host OS Supported Supported
So sadly, no. You need a new PC to make this work, or at least a CPU upgrade to an x64 model if it fits in your motherboard. I'd doubt that but I suppose it might be possible.

the last time i checked vmware (about a month ago)
the 64 support also required cpu with hardware-vt.
