Why soccer (football) sucks.
Mexico vs South Africa.
90 minutes of dribbling, chasing, passing, intercepting.
1-1 score
The worst part is, the game is left as a tie.

Not a huge sports fan, but I enjoy the camaraderie of it all. My beers and I really get to spend some quality time together while some mindless crap streams on the idiot box. When bothered by outside noise, when else can you say - STFU!! I'm watching the game!

I heard some guy on the Colbert Report say that soccer players were the best athletes. Overall I'd pick ice hockey players.

Re: Why soccer (football) sucks.
Hokey players play 1to 3 minutes and then they change and get back in the game a couple minutes later. Soccer players stay on the field 45 mins, take a break and come back for another 45 minutes. And the team can only change like 3 players on the field during the game.
Overall I'd pick soccer players
But that doesn't mean hockey players aren't athletes

I think the average player is on ice about 15-20 minutes. During that time they usually skate, get the snot knocked out of them, handle the puck, knock the snot out of someone...
What do soccer players do? It is worse than watching golf.

That's because hockey is 100x the pace and more demanding than soccer is.
I have played both hockey and soccer and I've got to ask a similar question: what do soccer players do besides run (and stand around)? Not many soccer players have strength and power outside of their legs.
Hockey players are the all around best athletes in the world because of their overall physical conditioning and skill required by the sport. I have seen Hockey players play with broken jaws, feet, wrists, and most recently a fractured shoulder. They have longer careers than any other sport also. On top of that, Hockey is a full contact sport played on an unnatural surface. You simply cannot match the demands in hockey.
By the way, ESPN has studied this kind of thing and they rank Hockey as the most demanding team sport in the world. Boxing was the only sport ranked higher, but is not a team sport.

Priorities I guess. In hockey it would be strength, in soccer I'd say endurance is more important. Its the way I see it and I guess that the "sport expert" who said they were greater athletes thought that endurance was more important than strength.
I don't think one's really better than the other. We could also bring basketball in, these guys are sprinting the whole game!
Edit : Oh and..

Re: Why soccer (football) sucks.
See the problem with soccer & hockey is that most of the action has no consequence in the game.
In Basketball, it's a high scoring game, so most of the plays directly impact the end.
In Football (Handegg), every yard is important on whether one team gets a 1st down and momentum.
Even in Baseball, base-loaded, etc, there is a buildup even though it's a slow game.
But soccer, it's 89 minutes of action that has no bearing on the game.
Outside of the scores, and saves by the Goalie.

Basketball is high scoring, but that greatly diminishes the value and excitement of each play (its very repetitive). Also, basketball players are just whimps. If they get sneezed on or looked at wrong they cry foul.
Baseball is slow and there's really no game going on. It's just a bunch of guys hanging out on a field kicking grass around and picking their noses.
Personally, I don't think there's a correlation between the amount of points scored and the excitement of a game. Like I said, basketball is repetitive. There's very little diversity/creativity in any aspect of the game. If you can score 50 baskets in one game, then the plays to get those baskets can't be too challenging or exciting. Hockey is fast paced and you have to work hard to get goals, which brings creativity to the game. You see a lot of failed opportunities, but most of the time the plays behind a goal are better than watching a puck cross the goal line.
I prefer great plays/action over goals/baskets/outcomes. However, I do agree with you that it sucks to watch a tie soccer game.

Somewhere between where it was and where it is would have been more to my liking. My first experience with hockey was a Blues / Flyers game in 1973'ish in St. Louis. A fight broke out and eventually some of the Flyers were in the stands fighting the fans!

Re: Why soccer (football) sucks.
In the UK, events such as the world cup are used as an excuse to cancel the few good TV programs that actually air and save a bit of money showing football and the offshoots of football where a group of retired football players that don't cut it as managers talk about the "bad luck" our national team is having and how they all are really good players.
Football: 90mins of incredibly wealthy, fragile men, running around in shorts after a round inflatable. It reminds me a little of a play pen but on a bigger scale.

Bettman should be fired. His tv contract with a channel that most people don't even have is reason enough.

ESPN is going to have to revise that. The most demanding team sport is (American) football. This will become increasingly clear as more and more studies show the shortened life expectancy related to playing that sport at the professional level. The demands differ by position, but the bottom line is the same for all (except kickers): Your body will fail in your 30's, and you'll end up partially crippled for the rest of your life, which, if you are a lineman, will be considerably shorter than the average person.

Good point, but how much do obesity and careless/criminal lifestyles affect the lower life expectancy?

Re: Why soccer (football) sucks.
I have no doubt that the weight is a key component, yet it is the price they pay to play at their position. A 200 lb lineman won't make it in the NFL, even if it would allow them to live longer. Also, when some linemen were interviewed as to whether they would change their behavior if it turns out that playing the way they are is definitely going to shorten their lives, they all stated that playing was worth it.
I wasn't counting careless/criminal lifestyles, as I doubt that is higher in the NFL than anywhere else, though it certainly gets much more publicity (and there are some types of things that they do which are not available to the average person).
