1) Avoid unnecessary conversation post the 'resolution'

Cons:

Threads are a public resource that doesn't exist solely for the benefit of the person who started the thread, and shouldn't necessarily be capped by the person who started the thread. I have seen many threads where a useful discussion continued after the thread had completed.

There are also people who would want to continue a discussion on a current thread. Are they to re-ask the question? Add a link to the other thread?

Also, sometimes something is thought to be resolved, but turns out not to be...

As for linking... that means it's just one more link I'm not going to click through... which then means I'm missing out on the history...

It ain't broke. I don't see a reason to "fix" it... plus I'm sure that's something that would have to be coded, tested and added as an add-on/hack that would have to be maintained along wit all the other stuff we've got going on here.

Yes, creating a new thread linking to the thread would be best like in situations where the thread is old or resolved as a point of reference. You should always provide basic information in your thread to help members help you
