Add Prefix functionality to VB6 forum
Can it be added in the similar way it's done in VB.Net (list could contain VB3/4/5/6)?
That will elliminate unnecessary questions - lot of people posting in the wrong forums.
They just don't know the difference so I think not finding say VB 2008 in the prfix list may stop them from posting...
Thanks.

Re: Add Prefix functionality to VB6 forum
Well, it basically says that in the forum description already!
Visual Basic 6 and Earlier
This forum is for all your Visual Basic (versions 3, 4, 5, & 6) coding questions that do not fit into one of the more specific forums below.
It is just a matter of people reading the forum description so they know if they are posting in the right place.

Re: Add Prefix functionality to VB6 forum
I think he means that if he posts int he vb6 sub forum with a vb5 question he can prefix the thread to indicate it's vb5.

I know that perfectly well but it simply doesn't work!

I suppose it is up to the individual to read the description but then again that is the problem with humans they don't always do what you want them to do.

My question was addressed to forum's admins and admins only.

Re: Add Prefix functionality to VB6 forum
If you are directing this public post only Admins then perhaps a PM would have been more appropriate perhaps.
Ps, people post VB6 questions in the vb.net forum too even though we have prefixes in there. Nothing is fool proof

Not sure what you mean - it cannot be done or you don't want to do it.
Since it's already been done in multiple forums how is it difficult to do the same thing in one more?
Perhaps someone can explain that.
Thank you.

Re: Add Prefix functionality to VB6 forum
RobDog888 wasn't commenting on the difficulty of doing it (which I think would be quite easy), but on the unfortunate fact that it wouldn't affect the issue of people posting in the wrong forum.
While it would be a reminder for people who are posting in the wrong place, it has already been proven to not work in those cases (the amount of VB6 threads in the .Net forum didn't reduce after the prefixes were added there).
It is a nice theory, but all it would really do is add more work for those who are already posting in the correct place (as virtually all "VB6 and earlier" posts are VB6, the rare exceptions already state their version).

So it really sounds like you don't want to do it. That's what I thought.
Thank you for reading. Case closed.

Re: Add Prefix functionality to VB6 forum
For me, I was also trying to clarify that if this was an "Admin only" thread that it should have been addressed as such to prevent other members from unwanted replies and wasting their time etc. VB6 is a vast majority of the version in that forum so you are asking the majority to do an extra step. Providing the best user experience is what makes it to production implementations.
We do appreciate all feedback and suggestions regardless of its outcome

Re: Add Prefix functionality to VB6 forum
Do we really have that many questions about previous versions of VB? If we do, I'll add it

Re: Add Prefix functionality to VB6 forum
Thanks JP.
I don't think it's about previous versions but rather preventing from posting .Net related question in in the VB.Classic.
My thought was if someone is paying enough attention when creating new thread then not finding say VB 2008 in the list may at least stop from proceding and perhaps force to check another forum.
I don't disagree that people will be making mistakes but preventive maitenance is all I'm asking.
In the VB.Classic list may look as followsP:
VB 1993 (VB3)
VB 1995 (VB4)
VB 1997 (VB5)
VB 1998 (VB6)
Thanks again.

No we don't, as a rough guess there are only about 1 or 2 a month.

The theory is good, but as has been seen in the .Net forum it does not work in practice - the amount of people who post in the wrong place does not decrease.
That is presumably because the people who mis-post generally do so because they don't pay enough attention.
There is no reason to suspect that people who are looking for VB.Net (or VBA) help in the VB6 forum will act any differently than their VB6 (and VBA) counterparts did in the VB.Net forum.
Finding a way to prevent mis-posting would be great (especially for those of us who have to move posts etc), but this isn't the solution I'm afraid - the main effect would be extra effort for those who are already posting in the correct place.

Re: Add Prefix functionality to VB6 forum
OK, if that's the reason, it won't work. We already have the two forums adjacent to each other right at the top of the list of forums. If people can't see and distinguish that when it's laid out right there for them and in front of them, they won't gather it from something they actually need to click. Sorry.
