Can i ask who you are referring to here ? i hope it's not me as coming form England, i like to think that English is my first language.

Odd, then, that you don't recognize the word soccer, it being a British word and all.

It would be just as foolish for Brits to complain bitterly when an American refers to himself as a Yank, with the Brit loudly proclaiming "You're not a Yank, you're an American!"

All it does it highlight the ignorance of the Brit. Maybe if you guys ever created a real football game like most of your former Empire did you wouldn't be so insecure about the word soccer.
