    Software as a Service

How many of you are working in shops that employ software as a service model?

In what way, have you found it to be useful?

In our shop we are subscribed to Salesforce.com
    a) Salesforce is implemented better than the earlier Siebel based solution we had.
    b) Licensing costs have been cut.

Another service that we have been thinking of looking into is an online backup service. This idea might be rejected owing to bandwidth constraints.

    How is your software configured?
    Where does the software run?

On the client's boxes or on your servers?

    No.

Because most non-service solutions we investigate have very reasonable costs, where 5-year projections typically show SaaS solutions as the more expensive choice. Even if not, there's also the convenience factor of having your own systems in place that you can access and change at any time, online or offline.

Our backup solution for example is a large disaster-proof NAS backup drive by IOSafe and EMC's retrospect software. It's waterproof, fireproof, and explosion proof. The video I linked to is of their smaller units, the Solo which is marvelous itself.
