    Pity - he's a brilliant bowler.
Pity they have such tough laws about taking drugs in sport.

Why don't the authorities just let them take whatever drugs they want? Instead of trying to curb it, why not just let them do whatever they want? They would still have to win on the field, right?

Ah, what about steroids? Fitter & faster etc etc - could make all the difference

It will only be a matter of weeks before others can get them too. In any case, using the drugs will not help unless you really are good. Thus if you injected me with a steroid, you can't expect me to win the 100 metres race. But with Ben Johnson it would be a different story. It's because he has the right stuff in him to be a world class athlete, and the steroids would only serve to give him that extra little boost.

Considering the present difficulties in processing the players' urine samples it might be better to abandon the ban on drugs altogether. Let the players use any drugs they think can serve the purpose. The international sports today has reached such levels that you won't be able to win purely because you happen to use the best of the drugs. You have to be actually as good as the competitors. Also by allowing use of drugs, the drug manufacturers are sure to market them everywhere, and so it won't remain available only to a select few players. Thus if an athlete in the US takes a particular drug, it won't be much time before an Indian athlete can use it too.

About the side effects of the drugs, that's for each individual player to decide. If you can allow cigarettes and alchohol which are widely claimed to be fatal in the long run, you can surely permit drugs.

Consider the hassles involved in testing players for drugs. The recent scandal involving Indian athlete Sunita Rani should also serve as an example in this regard. She claimed that the hosts Korea had sabotaged her samples so she would test positive. And there actually were many discrepancies about her dope test, and finally she has been cleared of the dope charges and given her medals back.

Or take the case of Shane Warne. He says he took the banned drug without knowing it was banned and only to cure his shoulder. Perfectly acceptable. But this small mistake of his, which might not have much bearing in the game of cricket, is going to cost him the biggest cricket event ever. Why spend millions of dollars on dope testing facilities, run the players through complicated and tense procedures and still let the mechanism be exposed to malpractices which can ruin an innocent player's career forever?

I don't remember exactly and am too lazy to re-click and re-read it, but the news said the report was ready much early but was released only just now. I think Shane Warne himself didn't know about that.

They did the test on the 26/1/03. He took the drug earlier on to help with his injury or something.

He's is not out of the World Cup he volunteered to go home and clear up his record.
Once he has faced the ADS board if they clear him he can then ask the ICC if he can play again as he was cleared. They will no doubt test him if clean he could play in the WC again.
Whether or not Aust wants to take that chance and see if he can be replaced is another story.

As for the drug he took well it can be used to hide a steroid or reduce fluid retention. In Shane's case i would say it would be the latter of the 2 as to keep him fit during his injury perhaps.
