Reputation enhancements
Here are 2 possible enhancements to current Reputation tracking system
within User CP:
1. Points: Add a Points column between Posted By and Comment.
This would facilitate at-a-glance recognition of how one's rep has
progressed. Currently the only way to see how many points a poster
added to one's total is to remember what the prior total was and
deduct that from the current total -- somewhat obtuse, I'd offer.
2. Latest Reputation Given: Add a companion listing.
In addition to the current Latest Reputation Received listing that shows
incoming rep, add the ability to also track outgoing rep, ie, to whom
you've given rep. Among other things, this feature could possibly help in
answering why one gets a "You need to spread more rep around" message.

Re: Reputation enhancements
Thanks, but some of the powers-that-be don't like the reputation system and so the chances of it being modified are slim (or none).

Marty
Yes, I noticed that in some other threads on this
matter -- sorry to hear. I, among others, like it.
Thanks anyway.

Re: Reputation enhancements
i know that the latest version of VB allows you to see who you have given reputation to. Im not sure what version vbf is running or whether it has it or not.

Re: Reputation enhancements
If you look at the bottom of the page you'll se we are running version 3.8.1 which isn't the latest.

I know beggars can't be choosers, but that does seem rather lame.

Re: Reputation enhancements
While having the latest version means having the latest features, it also has bad points.
One is that you not only have more features, but they are much more likely to have bugs in - staying a little bit behind means that the bugs are found by other people, and get corrected before we even have them.
Another is that upgrading always takes time, which means the forums need to be down for a while each time an upgrade is done. Depending on the changes between the old version and the new one, there can be issues that need to be fixed, which takes even more time and/or disables features that are important to us, such as the VBCode tags we used to have. There seems to always be something like that, as can be seen from the mass of threads in this forum after each upgrade.
On top of those issues this site is just one part of a group, so it makes a lot of sense to upgrade all of the ones that use vBulletin (about 30 I think) at the same time... and that means the staff who do it need to set aside a chunk of time when they can't do their other work.
Based on things like that, it doesn't make a lot of sense to keep up to date just for the sake of it - but only when there are features that are important to the site (rather than just "nice", like Social Groups), or a decent amount of time has passed since the last upgrade.

Hey,
All fair points. I was just curious, as I don't keep up to date with the versions of VBulletion, and don't actually know what new features there are in the latest release.

The latest version of vB is 4.02 but its a major change so Im sure it will be some time before we see any of the internet.com's forums being upgraded to it.

Re: Reputation enhancements
Hey,
I had a quick look around the site, and it doesn't look there is much in there that we don't currently have. Don't get me wrong, it looks like it has gone through a complete overhaul, and there are a couple nice new features, but on the whole, nothing that "needs" to be included.
Have you played with the new version Rob? Thoughts?
