IIRC unless you have a spectacularly good reason to change it, then you can't. You can try PM'ing one of the mods to see how far it gets you if you want to give it a punt.

Re: Changing name displayed in the forum
What did you want to change it to????
All men have an inherent right to life, the right to self determination including freedom from forced or compulsory labour, a right to hold opinions and the freedom of expression, and the right to a fair trial and freedom from torture. Be aware that these rights are universal and inalienable (cannot be given, taken or otherwise transferred or removed) although you do risk losing the aforementioned rights should you fail to uphold them e.g Charles Taylor; United Nations sources: http://www.un.org/en/documents/udhr/, http://www.ohchr.org/EN/Professional...ages/CCPR.aspx. Also Charles I was beheaded on the 30th of January of 1649 for trying to replace parliamentary democracy with an absolute monarchy, the same should happen to Dr Phil and Stephen Fry; source: http://www.vbforums.com/showthread.p...ute-Monarchism.

Correct... the usual advice is to create a new account with the name you want, and use that instead of your current one.

I echo what si_ stated. Unless you used an email address for your user name, we generally will not make changes once one is created and has posts.
Sorry.
Side note: Witis --> your signature is a bit long.

Brad, I had no idea there was a limit; what are the rules in relation to signatures?

Hello,
A general rule of thumb is to look at what other people have
Take it as a given that signatures that Moderators have at "ok". These typically contain a lot of links for helping people, and can be used as a good bench mark.

In terms of height, I would say that you are probably correct. However, in this case, I believe that "length" was being aimed at the amount of words in his signature

Re: Changing name displayed in the forum
Indeed, because the length isn't the same for everyone... on my screen Witis clearly has the longer signature.
Due to the amount of words (and font size) in Witis's signature, the height can easily double due to a smaller screen resolution and/or browser window size... whereas ones like gep13 and I have will only get noticeably longer if the resolution/window are half the size.
My screen resolution is a fairly common 1280x1024, and at that size Witis's signature is 10% longer (219 pixels versus 200). A minor reduction in browser size makes the difference much bigger... at an easily usable 1080 pixels wide the heights are 282 versus 200, at which point it is over 40% longer.

Nothing wrong with your sight kfcSmitty!
At the 1080p (1920 x 1080) and 1680 x 1050, which are the current main commercial resolutions, I get that for signature height in pixels:
Witis 162 pix
si_the_geek 170 pix
brad jones 142 pix
gep13 184 pix
At 1080p I can reduce the browser width by 10-20% and get the same results.
I just threw out the last of my old 4:3 monitors a couple of weeks ago, as taking into account the depreciation of IT equipment, I realised that nobody would be using those resolutions anymore which was about the same time they cut analog TV transmissions.
Some of the resolutions that are coming out now are starting to make 1080p look dated:
2160p (3840 × 2160)
4320p (7680 × 4320)
8640p (15360 x 8640)
I can't imagine coders having their main machines with anything less that 1080p (testing maybe).

Re: Changing name displayed in the forum
You don't need to imagine, you already know mine is less than that. While you may not have an old monitor, many people here do for a variety of reasons - and obviously the size of a signature is more of a concern for those of us in that category, because it causes more relevant text to be moved off screen.
While your signature is interesting it isn't actually relevant to this site, so it isn't unreasonable to expect you to spend a little time reducing the size (a simple change of font size would be enough) to minimise the effect it has on others.

From my research my signature is littler than many other members on the current technology available, so I don't see the problem.

Re: Changing name displayed in the forum
The "current technology available" is not important, it is about what people are actually using, and the size of the browser window (there are times when people have it at less than full screen).
For me (and others), your signature is noticeably taller than anyone elses.

Sure it is, there is no way to buy those monitors, so you are talking about obsolete technology.

Just to add some more to this...
It isn't just about resolution. I quite often dock a browser window to the left hand side, or right hand side, of the screen, at which point i becomes:
Witis 297 pix
gep13 220 pix
si_the_geek 199 pix
brad jones 164 pix

You can still buy them (it took me a few seconds to find this), and being "obsolete" doesn't matter - what matters from the hardware point of view is what is in use.
If you don't reduce the size of your signature, I will.

Re: Changing name displayed in the forum
Sure although you would have to dock quite a wide window to get those results gep13, my guess would be a docking window > 15% of the width of the browser which is a very atypical setup where everything gets all bunched up not just my signature.

That sounds a bit over the top si_the_geek especially given the exploration of the issue, and before you do anything please show me the rules regarding signatures that I have breached for future reference!

Bottom line, the Administrator of this forum, and two moderators, have suggested that your signature is too long. That alone should be enough for you to take steps to correct it.

gep13, I have just indicated that on the current technology available with a regular setup my signature is littler than many other members, so I can't see the problem!
I really don't mind adhering to the rules, so just show me the rule that I have broken and I will happily change it to comply!

Whether typical or not, it happens enough to matter - and something as busy as your signature has a far bigger impact than most other things.

Your exploration of the issue has been based around denial to support your own perspective (including insisting that everyone has what you consider to be "current technology"), so does not hold water.
Yours is not the only viewpoint, and all members matter.

There are no specific rules about the size of signatures, because there are too many variables to write a clear rule for it.

Your signature counts as "content", thus the "cease" part applies (you already know we find it objectionable).
This is your final chance to change it yourself.

The truth is that my signature is littler than many other members on current technology with a regular setup which applies to most of the members, so I can't see how you can possibly deem it too long!

Re: Changing name displayed in the forum
Hmmmm...... I blinked and this thread grew by about 20 posts and spiraled a bit out of whack.....
As the Admin, let me summarize a few things from this thread:
(1) VBForums is a technology forum. The discussions are generally about technology. Topics should fit a given forum area. We'll let non-tech stuff be covered in chit chat.
(2) There are no specific rules about signatures. We do allow signatures on this forum (we don't on some of our other forums).
(3) Signatures should follow my first comment, or they should be short. If a signature is off topic for this forum, then it should be very short. A favorite quote is fine. Several favorite, non-technical quotes is distracting noise. It was this level of distracting noise that caused me to comment that the signature was long.
Ultimately, this thread ended up not being about signatures or handles, but rather about blowing off what the moderators asked. A general rule of thumb is: If you disagree with the moderators (which happens), and if you don't seem to be changing their mind within one or two posts, then sometimes it is better to take the conversation to private messages or talk to me via email.
If anyone has additional questions about signatures, feel free to start a new thread. I'm going to close this one down.
Brad!
