I did a little of that, but found that I'm way too soft to make a habit of it. I kind of became free tech support, in that case. If you were selling the software, then it would be a strictly business deal, but then you'd have to be all business about it. I don't think I'd be good at that.
I see where you are coming from.
I think its just a matter of being smart about your contract with the client.
Why not approach it like the bigger software companies - offering free support for say 90 days or so, then after that you charge them for your time.
You can make anything worth your while if you set the terms up front, and the client agrees...
Thats how I plan to approach it.
If you dont dot your i's and cross your t's, the client will find loop holes - and abuse them.
I have found this out the hard way on previous endeavors..
