[RESOLVED] Apple Mac install windows?
Hello, I am looking for information on Apple Mac system computers:
can it run windows first of all?
how is it possible to format the c drive and install windows?
I never came accross Mac systems don't even know if it has a bios or how to boot a cd.
Any advice?
Thanks

What version of Mac OS? If it's 10.5 and newer then it already runs on intel hardware and you can dual boot it with Windows/Linux already anyways. I'd give it it's own partition instead of two OS's sharing the same one.

Re: Apple Mac install windows?
hi I don't really need to dual boot it. All I need to know is how to boot windows cd to wipe it out then install windows on it. But because I don't know how to boot a windows cd, some source I found says it is letter 'c' I need to hold down while it is booting, while on normal windows as we know it is mostly 'F2' tu get into bios change the boot priority and then it comes up with pressing any key. But MAC might not have such thing as bios, I'll try 'c' when I get home.
Thanks

Re: Apple Mac install windows?
Well, what we really need to know first is what the mac is, if it's Intel based (v 10.5+) then it's as simple as turn on the comp, insert the cd/dvd, boot from it and re-do the partitions during setup.
If it's an older Mac then it means it's running on Motorola hardware (Apple's proprietary) and Windows will need to run on an emulator and the emulator will need to run on the Mac OS.

Re: Apple Mac install windows?
"Start up from a Mac OS X Install disc (one whose version is closest to the version of Mac OS X installed). Usually, you can start from the disc by putting it in your computer, restarting, and holding the C key. Or, put it in the computer and click the Install or Restore icon you see in the disc's main window (after which the computer will start from the disc without you needing to hold C). Or, you can use Startup Manager or the Startup Disk preference pane to select the Install disc."
Is there a similar process for Windows xp installation ?

Re: Apple Mac install windows?
The problem is that it's a G4 CPU and Windows isn't compatible with it so first off when you try to boot from the WinXP cd on the Mac, it doesn't recognize it as a bootable cd. The 2nd problem is that even if you were to boot from the WinXP cd since the G4 isn't an i586 compatible cpu the DOS installer (and Windows too) will be sending it nothing but gibberish and it wont get very far.
A couple of years ago Motorola quit making the G processors for Apple, which forced Apple to rewrite the core of the Mac OS (10.5 I believe is the version) to make the OS i582 compatible they also coded in a bunch of Intel specific checks so you can't run it on an AMD cpu even though you can with Windows. Anyways the point is that Windows runs on i586 CPU's (Intel and AMD are the top two companies, but there are others) and all of the G series are not i586 so Windows wont run on them.
That being said, VMware runs on Mac OS and you can run WinXP (any version of windows) on it.

Hi, thanks for explanation, didn't quite understand your last sentence but if it is not possible then that's it.
Thank you

VMware is virtualization software, they have a Windows build, Mac build and Linux build (for most types of linux) for each version, so you can install WinXP in a virtual environment and the virtual environment is running on your Mac OS which is running on the Mac hardware.

I think you mean virtualization not visualization but yeah, they have free software you can download from their website: http://www.vmware.com/

Yea, I did... "virtualization" is technically not a word so it gets auto corrected all the time for me, one of these days I'll have it added to the FF word bank on all of the systems I use...

this is for the non-intel macs. The newer ones give you a boot menu by holding down the option key when booting. However you need to open up the bootcamp control panel from inside osx and it will resize your drive and free up a 2nd partition to put osx on.
also... no, macs don't have a bios. They have "open firmware" which is also a gui. You still haven't mentioned the model of mac, but if you aren't running at least osx on it, then there is no way windows will run on it.
