I can't explain your problem but try turning hibernation on, close the window, go back and turn it off, and see what happens.

hmm so far worked fine....
I noticed one thing though, all the times when it hybernated automatically, the computer was LOCKED. But today I actually logged in and unlocked it, maybe that was why it was happening...
anyways, windows xp is very shaky in many things. Today display drivers decided to mess up on themselves and I couldnt even change the refresh rates anymore (even after reinstalling all drives)... I had to download a program from ATI to change teh refresh rate. I never had any problems with windows 2003 :( alas that it's a server product though

I think it could be your power savign feature. Go to Control Panel click on "Power Options" and check if Hibernating/Standby is enabled after n Minute.

So far its been working ok, but it had happened more than 10 times before and I had double checked the power options...stupid windows

I know how it feels, it has happened to me too, not sure how i fixed it. Try looking into screen saver options, that has a power saving feature too. The fact that it is goign to Locking mode indicates that the Window is doing it.
Sorry couldnt be any help.
