confused about ADSL

right, i've been looking about at adsl packages from various ISP's, but they all come with a USB broadband modem. This is no flucking good because I want two computers to be able to share the connection without both of them having to be on.

At another ISP, I found they don't bundle the broadband modem, instead they recommend either USB modems or DSL routers...So, can I just plug a DSL router/hub straight into the ADSL-enabled phone line or what?! I thought you needed some sort of broadband modem.

I'm confused, anybody know what the hell I need to network these PC's and let them share the connection?

It is a wee bit confusing at the moment, as they have just made a load of changes to ADSL.

At the moment I would go for a Self Install Wires only deal, as these are the cheapest way to go at the moment, with prices at around £25 a month. Preferably do with an ISP that will sell just the service and not the USB modem / router. You will need some microfilters as well, these plug into your phone socket and split the phone / ADSL line.

As for sharing the connection, you will need is a DSL modem, and a router or a switch. This is why it is often best to get just the service from the ISP, so you can shop around for a decent Modem / Router / Switch/

So basically I need a router and a (non-USB) DSL modem that the router will plug into, right?

I found these guys (http://portal.plus.net/info2/residential/res_broadband_adslhome_selfinstall.html) who don't supply any equipment other than the service, so I might try them

dont forget to get microfilters like Lian said, or your phones will be extremely staticy, and might also effect connection. Get one for every phone in your home.

BTW Nic, this is all because skanky BT cancelled our anytime account today because their abuse department is run by a bunch of untrained monkeys, which means i'm paying for this by the minute, so no interesting chats for the next few days until it's resolved, sorry :(

HI Chris,
I dont know what part of UK do you live in, but i am on BT Openworld ADSL (£25 p/m). I signed up for the plug and go package. You get an usb adsl modem with that.

I have three machine all three of them are networked, and i am sharing internet connection in all three machine without any problem. I hooked up the usb modem to my main machine and enabled connection sharing. I didnt use any router or switch, just a simple hub which i picked up from work.

All together its cost me £80 for the plug and go package(one off) and £30 per month.

Like everyone i hate BT too, but i got no other option. NTL dont covery my area(Well i dont know if it covers any area :rolleyes: ). I had few problems with BT customer service but i am happy with the speed of the ADSL.

im running my adsl modem through a linksys cable/dsl router. i think with the USB modems, you would do it through a proxy on your comp

sorry i may be missing something but as Danial said you can share the internet connection with a usb modem!

I'd find that a lot more inexpensive than a dsl router which costs $1000 ozzie.

We have the cisco 800 series dsl router plugged straight into our switch and all works fine!
Surely you could just get a small hub to do the same if you went with the router.

i got mine for about $80US. The USB plug goes into your computer...I don't think there are routers for USB modems. I could be wrong though. My ISP tech dude person guy said that it's better to by an ethernet modem rather than a USB, because they're less of a pain to setup, and they're faster. USB can screw you up, especially if its running through a hub..

You need the microfilters, for me, without it, it disrupts the whole connection

yeah, you can share it with a USB modem, but that means leaving one computer on to act as a proxy server

Yes, my pc is on 24/7 anyway, so it doesnt really bother me. Also i am running my test website through IIS from my machine so i have to leave it on all the time.
