Noone in the real world knows. But over in the Potter thread, well, you might get some help.
(PS- if ANYONE who has the sense to have platforms numbered in 1/4 s f'fuksake, can be evil, well I'm buggered.)

It's not really used any more. It used to be used to make the page scroll around with the arrow keys when scroll-lock was on, instead of moving the cursor. It did the same kind of thing as page-up/page-down but with left and right as well.
I guess it's the old equivalent of a mousewheel.

In Excel, if you move the page up/page down keys, instead of moving the "cursor" itll move the whole thing.
I once was close to reinstalling Excel until I noticed this was the problem
I'm bringing geeky back...

Back in my days as an accountant we used archaic dos baised programs and I accidentally turned the scroll lock on. Sure felt stupid when I was crawling about on the floor testing the plug on my keyboard when the up & down arrows didnt work
