    C# 2005 Express for free

For those who aren't already aware, if you download and register C# 2005 Express by Nov 7, 2006 it is free. Note that this is not the beta but the RTM version and it is not time-limited. If you register before that date you never have to pay.

    People, people, please!
if you download and register C# 2005 Express by Nov 7, 2006 it is free
It was only released this Nov 7, so you couldn't download it before that. You have one year from the release date to download it and it's yours for free forever. After that it will be (at this stage) US$49. Read the FAQ from the link I provided.

Re: C# 2005 Express for free

The full CD image is over 400 MB for each, and about 200 MB for SQL Server Express and its accessories. I'm not big on these setup routines that download the bits and pieces while you're installing. Also, I'm not 100% sure what Microsoft classifies as having downloaded the app before the cut-off. If you download the setup only and then try to reinstall after the year is up, will they ask you to pay then? Quite possibly not if you already have a registration number, but I don't know for sure. Also, reinstalling will be quicker in future if there's nothing to download again. The downside is that if you download the CD image for all five languages (or four languages and one technology to be more precise) then much of what they contain will be redundant, like the MSDN library.

One of the posters in the VB Express thread mentioned that the.IMG files you download are really just .ISO files with different extensions, so if you rename them they will burn with just about any burner software.

if you get the demo of alcohol 120% you can use the 'imaging making wizard' to make an .iso from the .img file, and then just burn the .iso normally (that's what I did).

Well with alcohol 120% you can just mount the image as a virtual drive and autorun will pop up

Re: C# 2005 Express for free

If you have ImageDrive as part of your Nero package you can mount the disc images without burning to CD as well. You must change the extension to ISO for that though, as ImageDrive only recognises ISO and NRG.

True, but it tells you that it isn't a supported image and it didn't want to write a CD for me.

Re: C# 2005 Express for free

Has anyone tried downloading the registration benefits? It seems to be an IE-only process and note that you need to install an ActiveX control. I missed the message at the top of the window the first couple of times because an error dialogue appeared at the same time and that drew my attention.

Re: C# 2005 Express for free

Some that I've noticed - Mostly in the IDE

    Icon/bitmap editors not available.

Almost no templates compared to pro/team editions

    Truncated help file

deployment is.. not the best. (the "Publish" option only - Is that "clickonce"?)

IDE's are separate, even with multiple installed (Can't have a solution with a c# project and a vb control, for example - but can still reference DLL's, obviously, just need to use two IDE's)

Supposedly some big difference in how it interacts with SQL server, but as all my stuff uses DB2, I wouldn't know.

Check out the same thread for VB Express - Lots more folks chimed in, and the differences are pretty similar.

Re: C# 2005 Express for free

I could be wrong but I'd guess that the motivation to relaese them free was prompted by Borland's Personal editions of Delphi, C# Builder and C++ Builder, which have been free for some time now.

Re: C# 2005 Express for free

When I decided to get back into programming earlier this year, someone told me delphi personal was free. However, good luck finding it, it says right on the site you can't download it and they give very little info about where to obtain it from the "select publications".. I came from a pascal background, so I thought I'd be all over that. Glad I went the .NET route after all.

Is that right? I did get Delphi, C++ Builder and JBuilder Personal on magazine cover discs some time ago and I assumed that they were freely available. I think we all know where the "assuming" thing can lead. I guess Microsoft derves a philanthropy award after all.
