... is sometimes a problem

At my schools T1 connection, I sometimes have to wait two minutes get the screen that lets me make a new thread. Yet at home on my Cable connection, I can speed through your site. Any ideas why?



BTW, I'm not complaining profusly (I think that this is the most useful site for the language), but I think it could get to be a concern...

Your school's connection is most likely shared, with cable you get the lot all to your greedy little self

we have a partial T1 at school, after all the sharing each computer acts about a 28.8K

Actually, cable connection is also shared with your neighbors. The only good thing is that Cable has 3.2Mbps cap, which is big enough for sharing.

I don't know how they share it out around here, but my 512/256 aDSL connection does pretty well most of the time.

Only problem is that if you saturate your upload, the download slows RIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIGHT down

Cable and xDSL are different. xDSL is pretty much static. Cable is a shared line but big enough to share.

I live in a fairly unpopulated area, and almost no one has cable around here

best I've gotten so far is around 700kb/s

That means its a burst speed. It would not be constant. Cable usually has a very fast backbone but they limit connection speeds. At first you might get a lot of bandwidth, but in a few seconds it will go down.

I heard this a long time ago that if a lot of people in your immediate area have cable that the bandwidth will degrade over time as more and more people get cable. Is this true? I notice sharp drop off's when downloading music via a cable connection sometimes.

I normally get a good 60k/sec at most times of the day (barring general UK net congestion)

So I'm happy (It's what I paid for, anyway!).
