Laptop Restarts
After five minutes of inactivity, my laptop restarts. It's only happening since I installed eXtra Problems. Has anyone els ehad this problem? I've tried changing the power settings, etc, but nothing's working! I lost my entire computing project because of it, it's really pi$$ing me off now! Has anyone got a solution?

I don't have XP on my laptop so I am not sure how much I can help you but have you completely disabled the power settings on XP? Then I re-enable one thing at a time and see what happens.

Seems like with a laptop and Windows XP, you'd
avoid installing any EXTRA problems, seems like
there'd be enough problems as is....
but what exactly is eXtra Problems?
And I'd check and double check the power settings on the
thing as steve suggested.

Have done over and over again. When it's restarted, it says something about my graphics device causing an error. I've tried updating the drivers, but it doesn't work.
XP = eXtra Problems - since I've had it on my laptop, everything that can go wrong, has gone wrong, hence the nickname.

Could a power setting the BIOS affect it maybe? Have you checked in there? Actually I seem to remember reading something about XP is more likely to crash if you don't have your laptop plugged in @ the wall socket. Maybe you could try that and see if it eases your problems.

I use the one that's on XP, I've tried changing the amount of time before it restarts/goes on standby, etc, but it's not making a difference!

did you install XP on a blank machine? or over top of another OS?
It may be that previous OS had some third-party software that
managed the Off switch for idle time.
Also, try disabling completely any settings to turn off the machine.
If it still clicks off, you might try smashing it with a hammer.
This won't fix the problem, by anymeans, but you might feel better afterward.

just a guess
I don't know XP very well, but I guess it may have got control over CPU temp. warning system. Even if your BIOS control is passed, check that XP doesn't have any control over CPU temperature, or otherways, it may shut down your computer if he thinks the temperature is too high, at his will.

Thanks, I'll have a fiddle with it. I am gonna reformat my hard drie, and install eXtra Problems straight onto it, but I can't do that until the summer holidays. I can't write, so I need to use my laptop in college, and can't afford to have it messed up.

It's not doing it so often now. It was set to the "My Pictures" screensaver, and I ha a zip file in there that was freezing the computer. Still restarts now and again though
