Here is a good one for you
hi,
well it seems that i am not having too much luck with tech at the minute, not only is the back light on my laptop screen dying (which it will be sent back for, for the second time) there is now a faint blue dotted vertical line down the middle of my screen, not i thought this might be a windows thing with the wrong drivers or something stupid, so i put on both old and new drivers and that didn't make a difference, so to check that it still could be a windows problem, i booted in Linux and the blue line is still there. but the weirdist thing is that, it will only show up against certain colours, like blues and greens and a few shades of yellow.
so could this be a dead pixel thing ??
i could do with finding out what is causing this, so when it gets sent back in the next couple of days i can tell them to sort that out to, cheers
Some people have told me they don't think a fat penguin really embodies the grace of Linux, which just tells me they have never seen a angry penguin charging at them in excess of 100mph. They'd be a lot more careful about what they say if they had.

Certain kinds of monitors are supposed to have two faint horizontal lines going across the screen. This is probably what markman was talking about. It's not just Sony, though, and I'm sure it isn't all Sony monitors. It's related to the technology used within the monitor.
I'm very sure that vertical line isn't supposed to be there, especially if it wasn't there before.

are these lines on CRT monitors or LCD, because i am sure there aren't meant to be ones on laptops ?

I could cover the SuSe sticker with lots of pink stickers though
Faint lines going across a monitor would annoy me

CRT, not LCD. This won't happen on laptops.
EDIT: Oh, I see. This is a laptop screen we're talking about. I didn't realize that at first.

That's even more strange that the lines only appear on certain websites, maybe different backgrounds show the lines up more

yeah i think that they are semi-dead pixels, because ussually a dead pixel is bright white on the screen, but i think that these ones are dying when certain colours are being displayed and probably will die later, oh well, ringing the people up on thursday and get this thing sorted out !!

The line seems to be a common fault with most moniters, the gateway ones are the worst, the college odered a load, and each none had a line going halfway across the screen. I have a dead pixel, but I've never seen a row of them so I wouldn't really know if that's the problem. Dont' buy Dell!
