I've been a fan of SY from their early works on.
I've also been a big AC/DC, Iron Maiden, Motorhead, Zeps and all the rest of the Heavy metal/Hard rock club fan

For me Nirvana came right after the Pixies.

I'm not saying they weren't a great band because they were but I do know their roots.

There are plenty of other bands who were equally as good if not better and if I'm not mistaken, it was SY who got Nirvana to sign for Geffen (or at least gave them the idea by signing up first)

Check Out some solo stuff from Black Francis(lead vocals) It's pretty good stuff. Search by Frank Black, All of his solo stuff is under that name. Kim Deal(Bass/Guitar) has some killer solo stuff too.
