Windows apps are not the raison d'etre for C++. The windows API was written in C++ BECAUSE C++ has certain capabilities (as does any OO language) that you just flat don't have in non-OO languages such as C. These capabilities are enormuosly useful in creating complex relationships among data and functions and in creating a hierarchy of functionality that is like nothing that exists in non-OO languages.
What do you use it for? Well, it's best used for fairly complex development tasks of any type and it's much less useful for simple one-off utilities, for example.

It's a pity that the Windows API was written in C then

I haven't made a console program in a long time...well I do a lot at school, I really only make windows apps at home though.

Games, mostly.
C++ can handle just about anything you throw at it. Thats what I use it for =).

I think you mean MFC was written in C++. WinAPI was written in C.

Yeah, my comment about C++ for winAPI was a goof, but games in C++? I thought game writers stayed away from C++ because of the run-time inefficiency, no?

As a quick thing, in a lot of cases C++ trashes C because it can inline things efficiently
