conflicting IDE info
I have a WD30gig7200rpm and a Maxtor60gig7200rpm
Id like to put the larger (60gig) as primary master and the smaller (30gig) as primary slave.
However, according to this site, "Many Maxtor and Western Digital IDE drives are reported to not happily co-exist on the same IDE cable with the other manufacturers drive. Usually one of the drives will fail during operation. Solution is to put them on different IDE cables."
So I sent an email to Maxtor and to WD asking if this was true. I got two dofferent replies:
Western Digital:
"There is no known issue regarding the configuration of Western Digital hard drives with any other manufactured hard drive."
Maxtor:
"The drives will work together, but you might notice a decrease inthe performance of the Maxtor drive. The Maxtor drive is ATA133, and placing an older slower drive on the same cable may hinder the drive's performance. I would suggest putting the drives onto different cables to ge tthe most out of the newer faster drive."
Now my questions:
So which is it?
If they can not happily coexist, can linux run as secondary slave (thats my only other free IDE place)?

sounds like maxtor is trying to soup up there drives. I find all that a bunch of bull. all hard drives should work together. try it and find out. what is the worst that can happen? it's not like you can damage them.
so maxtor is ata133 when there are hardly any mother boards out that can support it.

I have my CDRW as secondary master and my backup drive as secondary slave and it still performs pretty normally.
I'm bringing geeky back...

justin:
but thats because you tell your proggy to burn the data. If the burning proggy was on the other hard drive, the performance would probably decrease
scoutt:
That linux (and linux NEVER lies ) site said it could be damaged. Ill have to look into the 6 year warranty i got, but thats not for the WD drive, so if the WD drive fails instead, Me = vbScrewed

why would it fail? all hard drives are backwards compatible. so if you WD is ata100 and the maxtor is ata133 why do you think it will ruin the WD?
same as you putting an ata66 cd rom on your ata100 hard drive cable. does your hard drive fail, no it might slow down a little but that is it. your computer runs as fast as the slowest part in your computer. so if you had a ata133 and a ata100 it will only run as ata100.

what if they are on separate IDE cables? would it still be as slow as the weakest link?

all depends on which on eyou boot off of. I don't see any harm in it if they were on the same ide. you won't notice any difference form ata100 to ata133

id rather not use it that way if there was any chance of a problem. If no one can find the proof of no conflict im hoping for, then i guess ill have linux run on secondary slave.

scoutt I'm running an ATA/100 drive on an ATA/100 cable and the master is ATA/33, and that drive is running at a pretty normal speed, certainly not ATA/33.. Explain that..

I've had several WD HDs fail... WD doesn't like being Maxtor's ***** on the IDE cable, IIRC... I'm pretty damn sure you'd be able to have the linux boot up on the secondary slave... It wouldn't make sense for it not to... Just make sure you get the right jumper settings...
And why can't you put the CDRW as the secondary slave...

Ummm.... Having the CDRW being the slave, when the master is a drive that WINDOWS CAN NOT SEE, won't make a difference... I have my CDRW drive as my IDE0 *****, yet I still burn a more than full CD in under 5 minutes...

Again, my burning software is on the same channel as the CDRW, and burns in under 5...
I don't think it has much of an effect whatsoever...
You can also have the crap you wanna burn on the other channel, if you're that paranoid...
