One of the computers has to be a server, the rest can be workstations or just plain windows boxes.

In other words, you have to install Windows NT server or Win 2000 Server, etc.

There are also programs like PC Anywhere that will let you copy files the are physically connected by a hub. This isn't the same as being able to browse for files on a remote computer.

I always thought the router had an ip address then you can telnet to the router enter the password and telnet to any box that it is connected to.

And with most routers you can configure them to allow certain ip address's straight through.

are you behind the router and trying to connect to other computers behind the router?

You don't need a server at all, just install all of the same network protocols on each machine and make shared folders, then you can see each computer in network neighborhood and their files.
