If all you need is basics (ex. video compilation, scene order, audio/video overlay), VirtualDub is all you need. Otherwise, download a trial of Premiere.
All contents of the above post that aren't somebody elses are mine, not the property of some media corporation.
    (Just a heads-up)

You probably don't want to start with Premiere though. I learned Avid Cinema (crap) and iMovie (less crap but still crap) before learning Premiere. I'm going to learn Final Cut Pro 3 next.

    Probably the $99 tinkertoy...

For professional video editing, there's really no way to go other than Premiere or Final Cut Pro...

Most anything is good for home use...even the Windows Movie Maker...it's like telling grandma to build a rig with a GF4 in it, it just doesn't happen...

If you use Windows Movie Maker, you better leave VBF because nobody will ever have any respect for you EVER...that program is so worthless, it's like iMovie with 2% of the features. OMG OMG OMG IT DOES DISSOLVES! DUDE!

LOL i don't even use it

I'm just saying not everyone needs whatever fancy **** Premiere offers...Ulead seems good to me for what I've used it for, which is very little

I agree, Premiere is probably the worst choice you can make as a starter video editing proggie...I've heard good things about Ulead's schtuff, so IMHO that's the way to go if you're on a PC. iMovie would probably the best if you're using a Mac just because you've already got it for free and it is very easy to use.

Keep in mind that Premiere and iMovie both by default use massive files. Premere's DV streaming file format is 3.2 MB/sec, and iMovie's is around 6.4 MB/sec. You need literally at least a few GB free for each project you do. The files may be huge, but because they're completely uncompressed, rendering transitions and titles is much faster than if they were stored as, say, MPEGs.

Like BigBosky said, they use Max and Lightwave but I would say most of them use Maya... that IS the best in my opinion...

Filburt, since youre more into movie making, let me ask you something... At this website, I read that they used "Octane and Octane 2 Workstations" to make the movie Ice Age (Made with Maya) and I was wondering what are these Octane worksations

IIRC they're extremely powerful machines, like Avid editing machines. Avid machines literally can cost $50,000 to $100,000 with all the hardware in them.
