We have heaps of them here some ranging from 1992 and they all still work fine.
We take them into the middle africa and have never had a problem.
Though we dont have any of that model mostly the latest Satellite Pro's forget the number.
We've had them fall from aircraft luggage holds to Komatsu trucks and still work like magic.
No i've never noticed lots of hard drive clicking no more than other comuter anyways.
Speakers well we never really used them for that but they where alright for laptop speakers.
Just plug some bigger ones in!
Ohh good tip if you put your coffee next to the heat sink and run lots of cd's it'll keep it warm for an extra 30mins or so.

That would be my second choice over the Toshiba, mainly because of price: I'd have to pay ~$200 more, plus shipping to get a Dell, while the Toshiba is at CompUSA at normal MSRP.

One thing I noticed though is that the Tosh only comes with a 1-year warrantee...should I fork up the $200-$300 more for a 3-year? At that point the Tosh and the Dell would be tied.

Brand new?
If you were a company i'd say yes!
Home user i'd tend to say unless this is going to be you main computer and do a lot of heavy travel. I mean like planes etc and a lot of battery use then i'd say no.
But if you have the money then fine!

Satellite 3000 is a good machine for the money overall
Some pluses (no particular order):
FIREWIRE! (a few of them)
multiple USB outlets in side and back
small, thin, and light
Some gripes (no particular order):
2 choiced for diplay res - big and small
doesnt always recognized that a CD or DVD is in the drive .. have to reboot
clip thing that holds the monitor down breaks off easily
Dont lose the ac adaptor! It is nonstandard and very hard and expensive to find a replacement.
All these experienced on 2 different machines ...

I have heard this on 2 machines ... both the HD, fan and CD/DVD seem abnormally noisy ... HD definitly makes clicking noise.
I did lose the HD kinda out of the blue ... ran some recovery software and it didnt find anything ... formatted and came back up fine.

My dad's laptop at work P2-300 does it sometimes...I'm not particurally worried about general noise (with the system I plan to get it will need cooling, GF2Go/PIII and all). You just reformatted and the problem went away?

actually i have reformatted twice.
the first time i had complaints about some ethernet cable, rebooted and it came up fine. Got this error intermittently for a few boots, then just wouldnt boot at all (blinking cursor).
second format was because my ethernet adapter wouldnt work and after a trying a couple of zillion things I gave up and reformatted (I really wanted to implement multi boot anyway).
Also I forgot to mention that batteries are crap on the 2 Satellite 3000 that I have experience with. One only works for 5 minutes now (4 months old) and the other only charges to around 80% .
Considering the price I paid, I am happy with the machine though. The HD problems have actually helped me in that I have a stricter back-up discipline these days
