Government is another way to say better…than…you.
It’s like ice but no pick, a murder charge that won’t stick,
it’s like a whole other world where you can smell the food,
but you can’t touch the silverware.
Huh, what luck. Fascism you can vote for.
Humph, isn’t that sweet?
And we’re all gonna die some day, because that’s the American way

If I can't suggest custom built to someone I'll usually suggest Micron PC or Falcon Northwest. Both have comparable prices to Dell and far more standardized parts, and what's also good is that you get MICROSOFT Windows XP, not Dell Windows XP (referring to branding everything with the DELL logo)
Dells are fine for businesses though since their support kicks ass.

Yes, but a lot of folks upgrade and game and such...Dells aren't really good for that...
They don't let you add in 16 million drives like we like to do
And they are also more costly...
I don't like em because of their nonstandard architectures and lousy preinstalled software...but everyone is entitled to an opinion and I'm glad that youre happy with yours.

I actually like Dell for laptops Toshiba too
Laptops are a different story because you can't exactly build a laptop...and Dell sure is a helluva lot better than Compaq

I only asked about the laptops because I saw a bit of a quick reaction to go against the dell desktops.
I agree about the laptops though and to this day I haven't heard one complaint about their laptop quality.
Sure wish I could build one though.

Yep that'd be awesome...I think it's actually possible but very impractical.

I bought a Dell 3 years ago, no problems with it.
The only way you will get a "hard to upgrade" dell is if you don't customize it and get one of their off the shelf computers. I have added all kinds of stuff to my puter, and not a single problem. Actually, their case was pretty good compaired to other sub 100 dollar cases you buy at retail.
The first thing I did though is format the HD. I installed what I wanted. I do that with any new computer though, so it wasn't just because it was Dell.
People hold grudges to much when it comes to PC's. Sure, once you build your own, you don't want to buy a prebuilt one again, but that idea dosn't extend to EVERYONE. I would never build a computer for my Grandparents, I would have to support it. That is why I would just tell them to buy a Dell. So usually I break it down into two categories, people with the knowledge to build and fix it themselves, and people who don't. If they are part of the latter, then I tell them to buy a prebuilt computer with tech support. I recommend Dell highly because of their tech support.
One more thing, if Dell can build you a computer with most of the hardware brands you want (IE: vid card, sound card, speakers, monitor, etc), you would be stupid not to do it. They get the hardware MUCH cheaper than you can get it (try adding it up, you just can't do it, I tried many times.)

when i was looking for my computer i compared dell, custom built, and i build it. Dell always cost more, custom built and a system i would build cost about the same (within $10) so i went for a custom built (mainly cause of the warrenty)

Show me. Include the price and specs of a Dell, then show me the parts/specs that you would buy to make the same system. Include everything, like the full version of Win XP (professional or home, which ever the dell comes with), Office (if included with the Dell system), etc.... Also include the shipping costs of both the dell, and all the parts you ordered. Leave nothing out.
I don't want made up prices, I want links. Prove to me that it is a better deal....Then I will change my mind.

Toshiba suck......
1. Try setting the brightness of the screen
2. Numerous returns to reseller due to shoddy drives installed
3. Crap control software.
Dell Inspirion series is good......
