A new user status : poof

I think there should be a new userstatus, especially reserved for those "special" members among us.
So perhaps there could be a voting option for who's the poof of the week, or poof of the month ?

I know who I'm voting for

You use the word "poof" which (at least in the US) is derogatory
term used for gay males. By using this term, you imply that gay
males SHOULD be derided for a condition which most professionals believe to be outside their control.

Kinda like calling a Pakistani a "wog".

Sorry, Plenderj, but while eyes might be the windows to the soul,
word useage is the main street to beliefs. ie: the words you use
imply your deepest beliefs.

Ah, cultural differences again.

In Scotland, I'm pretty certain the term poof is not just derogatory for gay males. And I'm sure this is the case in most places outside of North America.

For instance, if my mate can't come drinking with us because he has to stay in with the misses, then well call him a poof. Hell, he will probably call himself that. yet, he's staying in to keep the wife happey.....therefore to have sex with her.

I've been called a poof many a time (a lot by my brothers) because I wouldn't do certain things. Touching my tounge to a 240 volt supply being one that springs to mind!

Relax. This is one of those North American politically correct thingies, that doesn't really apply to the rest of the world.

Hell, I got pulled up for referring to one of my Irish mates as a tatty-puller (potato picker), by a Canadian. My mate promptly dived in and told the guy to piss off. I can call them what I like and they can call me what they like (sheep-shagger if you must know). Hell, how did America get so overly sensitive? Most other cultures use these phrases as a friendly dig.

My father always refers to what you would call gay people as poofs. What else is he meant to call them? As far as he was brought up, a gay person is someone who is happy. And he still uses the term in that sense. I suppose, he could call them queer, but I'm sure that would be offensive to some Americans. Jees.

More on the cultural differences.

Wog = Immigrant to oz, normally Italian or Greek. The Wog community have taken the term and turned it into a non-racial slur hence "Wogs out of work" "The Wog Boy" etc....

Like the byline to Wog Boy, "Every Wog has his day"

Likewise, gay now seems to = lame....

poof isn't really used downunder.....

Wog ... short for Polywog ... someone who hasn't crossed the equator ... sorta derrogatory, but in a nice way ... you squids know what I mean

Pretty obvious that there is so much diversity here (same words mean different things) that it doesnt make much sense to get offended by names.

WOG = Western Oriental Gentleman or something...

Again, not derrogatory... but was considered so in the UK presumably because it was used in a derrogatory way and the Government became sensitive about political correctness. The Golliwog kids toy was banned in the UK (I think in the 80s?? someone may be able to help here) and the Robinsons Jam brand mascot was made to be more politically correct (the golliwog had to be scottish or a skier or a postman or something - apparently that made it OK to use!?)

I find that wog can be OK to use in the company of friends - when it is taken affectionately as opposed to offensively. However, with most terms, some will find it offensive and you have to respect that.

Poof on the other hand.... poof is fine - not derogatory (I would be very surprised if anyone took offense at that)
