    Setting up a Win2K Server

I have Windows 2000 Professional on two of my three computers, and one of them is just running as a webserver for my friends' site. I want to make my family log on to the network, so that I can give whoever access because I found out my sister was on MY computer sending e-mails with MY e-mail address. I want to block them from using the computers without a valid account, just to see if I can do it. Can I run a server using Win2K Pro, or do I have to get the Server version of 2K?

If I can do it with Pro, does anyone know of a good tutorial on how to do it? I don't want to buy a book to do this, since it's just a little project and I rather spend my money on usefull items, like a GeForce 3 or 4

    Thanks
    Joey

PS When in hell did we get a "General PC" forum here? I like it!

How about a real video card, like the Radeon 8500 or the upcoming 8800

OK back on topic...so you want to run a "server"...like, a home network server with files and stuff on it? What kind of "server" are you talking about?

I believe 2K Pro can run servers, but it just isn't as advanced as 2K Server, or Adv Server...

depends if you are running apache i really don't htink it matters whether it is pro, server or advanced server, i think advanced server just includes more MS stuff, you should run apache i saw a website of defacements in X month and not one was apache, all IIS

Those are the idiots who don't patch it

Apache and IIS are both excellent web servers, IIS tends to have a far easier setup but you have to remember to maintain it. I know many people who are happy running both.

I didn't need the extra features IIS offers since I run a small web server so I'm using Apache 2.0 beta. was a ***** to set up though

I hate editing configuration files...pain in the ass

    I like GUI stuff

But I set up Apache as an experiment...had to have Beaker help me out it was so confusing....domain this, server that...I'm used to just installing and running and having it work

GUI is always better. I use Apache 1.3 which was really easy to install...I didn't want to go with the beta cos I had 0 experience and didn't want any hassle.
What is the answer to this question?

I am getting used to it now but when you have never used it before and are completely clueless a GUI would help a LOT.

    Exactly.

It puzzles me why some apps still use technology that's so old, didn't Apple get rid of CLIs and config files 20 years ago?

I will never, in my lifetime, ever buy another ATI card. They have done nothing but give me problems. I know they are supposed to be the best because of their support and drivers and whatever, but they always seem to fook up when I get them in my hands.
I already have the webserver running, that's not the problem. It's neither Apache or IIS. It's OmniHTTPd 'cause I like the ease of use, and it's not like I get a million hits a day. It's running off a slow DSL connection, it works for what I want/need.

    About the server:

I want to make everyone in my house have their own username and password, like school, and have them log in to my computer running Win2K before they can do anything, like go on the Internet.

If that doesn't explain it more, then just give me a little while to respond, I have to go to work

The older generation ATI's had more problems than the newer ones.

    But whatever...

I think I'm just gonna stick with my TNT2-M64 for a while. It runs most of the newest games perfectly fine, just not at the highest settings, and besides, the only games I really play are Counter-Strike and MCM2, both of which run great on the TNT2.

You don't need a server to validate usernames in Win2k. Just go into the users control and make you admin and give other people guest accounts so they cant do jack
