...to pre MS Dos days when there were multiple competing OS's on the desktop.
We have been mucking around with various versions, brands and are finding that they don't all work as you would expect. Main problems seem to be recognising network cards and databases deployed to them.
Mandrake easy to install, flatly refused to recognise the lan card, even though NT, various MS Desktops, and versions of unix had no problems...
RedHat recognised the lan card but wouldn't run the database, in versions 7.0 and 7.1 but decide to partially run in 7.2
Suse just went and sat in the corner with the Tom Tits.
Are we headed back to the days of having a commodore OS, a BBC OS, CPM, Apple's weird thing, and a host of others
Currently having to evaluate Linux versions to see if they will run out database tools.... so far happy with Red Hat Linux 7.1 ... the rest are problematic....
The one thing l do like about various linux installs is the ability to split large disks up, without having to worry overly about volume size and getting the extact right size..... damn said something good about linux....

Now you have to go through the ritual of penguinization, they've possessed your soul
My experiences with Linux...well...tried something new...felt kind of "cramped" with it, as it didn't really support anything I owned nor any games...so i switched back to Windows.
But then again I'm just a lowly home user and I can't really say much about it for the server environment.
