it happened on my sisters comp (also win2k sp2)comp.
if you take the lan card out and move it without properly uninstalling it, itll add another lan connection (thus the "#2")
what i did was i removed my lan card from the device manager rebooted into safe mode, went back into device manager, then selected "show hidden devices" within the device manager and then removed anything to do with the lan card. also check in add/remove programs. then i shut down, took my lan card out, and then rebooted into normal mode. opened regedit (backup the registry first just in case), and search for anything with the name of "local area connection" or your lan card's name. , and then delete it. then shut down. shut your router off. put your lan card back in, and boot up. install it and everything. then shut down, turn your router on, and reconfigure everything. it should work now (it worked for me)
