This is markman's dad posting this. He doesnt have internet right now.
The below is what he told me to post:
Hey all. Ive come across this really wierd problem. First, my specs: Epox 8K7A, Athlon xp 1300+ fsb 266, 3com internet card, win2k sp2.
So I was fiddling with the cable of my monitor to change the color of the screen (POS monitor), and when I looked up, my internet connection was out. My computer had been on all day yesterday and I dont know if it had internet during that time, all i know is that when I looked it didnt have the internet. So, I tried restarteding a couple of times; it still didnt work. Below is a list of things I did:
) Changed the position of the lan card on the mobo
) Changed the lan card with one from netgear (f311)
) Changed the line going from the lan card to the linksys router
) took the router out of the network and plugged myself directly into the cable modem
I know the internet is still up since my mom's computer could still access it through the router and throught the modem directly. I tried every possible combination of the above and the internet didnt work. Then I noticed a funny thing. Whenever my computer was hooked up into cable modem (directly or indirectly) my virus scanner hung up for about a minute when I started up my computer. If there was no wire coming out of the lan card, or if the wire wasnt plugged into anything on the other side, it didnt freeze. so I ran a virus scan (Mcafee 4.5.0.534) to see if there was a virus and there wasnt. So now Im stumped and without the internet.
It cant be the lan card
It cant be the router
It cant be the slot on the mobo
It cant be the actual internet
It cant be the wire form my computer to the internet
Who setup the connection. Got this once under 2k, not sure why but my internet connection to the ISP l use simple scrambled itself. Something to do with not clocking the connection off correctly, Windows thought some one was already connected via modem wouldn't allow re-connection, but didn't show the first connection.....weird.
Contacting my ISP and they talked me through the settings, there's approx 10 of the things you need to check, and have left the process at work. Contact your ISP tech centre they will talk you through it.....
Have reported this as a bug to MS...but downunder the local boffins ain't exactly hot on their own products.
Hope that helps somewhat. Haven't had the problem since, so maybe a dude option in the original setup of the modem connection.
Hope that helps mark's dad. Best advice contact the ISP ppl, and of course blame them for it
Hey its me now. Im using the internet at the school now...
could you explain what you mean by not clocking the connection off correctly, Windows thought some one was already connected via modem wouldn't allow re-connection, but didn't show the first connection
If your modem connection drops out abruptly, it seems that some settings in Windows get screwed. Next time you try and connect, you get weird error messages. The modem looks like it isn't doing anything, but windows thinks the port is in use and so will not do the connection.
Had this and phoned my ISP, they explained how to reset everything, which involved a lot of unticking boxes. Even if you reboot, it doesn't automatically clear the problem.
Weird only ever had it once on Win NT 4.0 .....
As stated talk to your ISP, and they will guide you through it.
Im relutant to contact my cable isp since they forgot to add us to the billing list and thus if I called them they might notice and add us to it.
Anyways, I discovered something that might have to do with it.
I started up in safe mode and under network adapters, there were ones I had never seen before, such as Direct Parallel and WAN Connection. I restarted in Safe Mode With Networking and those were all gone and all that was left was my normal lan card, but it was called "3Com EtherLink XL 10/100 PCI TX NIC (3C905B-TX) #2"
That #2 at the end might mean that windows is thinking there is another lan card or something, but there are no memory conflits. I looked at control panel>networking and there was a "Local Area Connection 2". Hmmmm
I looked at that and saw that:
Client for MS Networks
File and Printer Sharing
Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)
were all checked. I then went away and came back 1 hour 30 minutes after I turned the computer on, and it had recveuved 24,583 bytes, and sent 33,317 btyes. That definately shows that my internet is working and that its just iwnodws.
In conclusion, Ive narrowed it into 3 things:
) Jethro's idea (can you possible find out what you did)
)I have a new trojan that is not added to my virus scanner's virus definitions (mcafee stopped making updates for my virus scanner last month)
) Windows thinks there is more than one lan card, the real one is connected to the internet, and IE, AIM, etc are trying to use the nonexistant one.
My guess is the first, Jethro's idea (I dont want to call my isp, so can anyone else pretend they have the problem or something? BTW, Im with Shaw, previously called Moffat)
HELLLLLPPPPP
Am at work now, not that you would notice...easter break is upon us so no one is calling in calls at the moment, just as l say that the friggin phone goes off.
Need to know OS etc, sorry been up since 2am so ain't firing on all spark plugs.....need coffee...and tonite will put through support call to iprimus and jot down the details.
it happened on my sisters comp (also win2k sp2)comp.
if you take the lan card out and move it without properly uninstalling it, itll add another lan connection (thus the "#2")
what i did was i removed my lan card from the device manager rebooted into safe mode, went back into device manager, then selected "show hidden devices" within the device manager and then removed anything to do with the lan card. also check in add/remove programs. then i shut down, took my lan card out, and then rebooted into normal mode. opened regedit (backup the registry first just in case), and search for anything with the name of "local area connection" or your lan card's name. , and then delete it. then shut down. shut your router off. put your lan card back in, and boot up. install it and everything. then shut down, turn your router on, and reconfigure everything. it should work now (it worked for me)

nope. I did what you said, it now says "local area connection" without the number 2, but my internet still isnt reaching my programs. I can ping my router, and the properties of the local area connection say things are talking to the outside internet, but its still not working.
Im pretty sure the virus scanner and the lack of internet are related since the scanner freezes for a bit, and while it freezes I cant access the properties of the local area connection.
*Waiting for Jethro to come back and tell his explanation on how to fix it*
Ok you good to go in approx 2 hours, will need to talk to iprimus support from work so l can have a connection going at the same time.....
Ok Win2k, full problem diagnostics in case l miss something, and will see what their help desk can supply
Actually if you can't be on in 2 hours that's okay, just post the full details, will phone iprimus, and post the results...also need your connection details and properties....
cheers....amd waiting for iprimus guru to get in, last night the guy l talked to was just shaking his head...

Problem and symptoms so far
My line running from the computer to the router works.
My lan card works
My modem works
There is a connection to the router (I pinged it)
There is a connection to 127.0.0.1 (I pinged it)
After leaving my computer on for 1 and a half hours, my local area connection properties dialog box said I had received 24,582bytes and sent 33,317bytes.
Whenever I am connected to the internet (not actually on, just the wires are all connected so I should be), my virus scanner (Mcafee 4.5.0.534) freezes for about 1 minute when I boot up. During that time, I cant access the property pages for any network-related properties box
And the reason I posted this to begin with: Programs can not access the internet, including IE, AIM, etc...
I hope we can get this working. Tell me if you need any more info. I dont know what you mean by being on, I will be by this computer then, but I wont have aol instant messenger on or anything.
Thanks

ok you say you can ping everybody? well can you ping yahoo? can you ping M$
also 24K and 33K is just chitter chatter. what happens when you open IE? get a dns error? well do you have the dns settings set to the internal ip range. 192.168.0.x if so then disable that. if not try to add it.
does IE have things set to automatically detect settings in the internet tools -> connections -> lan settings
double click on the network connection click on the tcp/ip setting for that NIC. then click on properties. does it say obtain an ip address automatically?
Okay. What you're going to want to do is find out what computer is what number. You can go to 192.168.0.1 and that will bring you to the router settings. Type in your junk and look for unassigned local IPs. Then, activate one if required and set that one as your IP or whatever. I'll give you a zip of all my settings, it works with a LinkSys Cable Router and a D-LINK DFE530-TX card.
All contents of the above post that aren't somebody elses are mine, not the property of some media corporation.
(Just a heads-up)
And I just tried pinging it from another computer on the same network but "reply from 65.195.232.113: destination host unreachable" for 192.168.0.1 to 192.168.0.5
in your lan connection properties, is yours ip entered right? how about subnet mask....the gateway and the primary dns server should be your router
and you can't ping other comps on your network? make sure your workgroup is the same, maybe that got screwed up somehow
edit: do you have dhcp enabled on your router?
goto on a comp that works, and goto start->run and type "cmd", and then type ipconfig. note the address
lets pretends it 192.168.0.5
goto your comp that isnt working, right click on local area connetion, tcp/ip properties, and enter 192.168.0.100 as your ip. put the router ip as gateway and primary dns

fixed it. I ended uyp getting a new lan card (that didnt work by itself) then moving my hard drive to a different ide cable. As I said in the beginning, very weird. Thanks everyone for your time and efforts!
PS. anyone find a good monitor for a really cheap price?

hmmmmm imagine that
and moving your hard drive to another ide cable had no effect. if you booted to windows then it was ok to begin with. but if it works now, cool.
This question goes beyond the terms of your maintenance agreement with iprimus, which is for home use. You may wont to check your lan card for possible damage.
