Can you fry memory by scanning it???
hey,
i'm looking for Crucial DDR memory and i asked that guy for some pictures of the RAM he's got. He scanned the stick with scanner and now he tells me that the stick doesn't work.
is that even possible? i mean, it's just the light...
please let me know!

Handling it can cause it not to work. A simple static discharge.
There is nothing active in the scanner that should disturb the stick, save the fact that there are moving parts which could build a charge, possibly on the plate.
It is more likely that he has a carpeted floor.

I imagine it's perfectly possible. There's a motor in the scanner that moves the light along, and that means oscillating electromagnetic fields. Could be that those fields induced a current in the RAM that was high enough to fry it.

Go for it. Once there is a problem, there is always a problem. It isn't self correcting.
Like Harry said, it might not've been seated well.
I had this job a number of years ago (Windows 3.1) as a LAN tech and we had a little box that would test a stick of memory for parity errors, like scanning a HDD for bad sectors.
I'd have to imagine they still make these things, I've just never priced one.
