Actually, the only two English people still in this discussion are Harry and, well, you. Neither of the two people who've pointed out that you're a bigot are English; Gaffer's an Ulsterman, and I'm Scottish.

    Wrong on all counts, then.

Okay, so there's no culture left. So exactly what the hell are you so concerned about?

Don't talk such bollocks about 'you English are...'. I personally can be very irritable and I personally get irritated by your ridiculous opinions. It's not because I'm English. You don't see me saying 'You cornish are such idiots' because:

    a) You're English too so you're basically talking to yourself
    b) I realise that it's not actually people from Cornwall in general that are idiots, it's just you.

It depends on what you want from a holiday. If you want cold winds and driving rain, try the West coast. If you want colder winds and driving rain, try the East coast.

For midgies, you can go pretty much anywhere North of Perth.

You can go on about that all day but basically were culturally distinct from the english and although the rest of the english dont give a **** about that, it matters to us.

Is that typical summer weather ?

Was thinking about Glasgow or Edinburgh, possibly go up north in the Highlands.

    Yes, Mr Egg. Of course.

How can I be concerned about attacks on english culture when I'm from Northern Ireland? Why do you have a problem with the english? What could thay have done that was so bad, so bad that is provokes such angst from you?

I get really sad when I see such narrow mindedness. And I do not apologise for quoting terrorism - I've grown up with people of your "outlook" on life, and half of them are in prison now

Okay, so if you are still 'culturally distinct' then this stuff about abhorrent crimes against the cornish and 'cultural subjugation' you keep on whinging about is just bollocks. You still have a distinct culture, so you say.

    So which is it?

You should come over here (Belgium) and live here for a year.
Then you'll learn what cultural, social, economical and lingual differences are (Gallic vs Germanic).

Don't you go Irish on me.

You can get fantastic weather in Scotland, but you have to take your chances. I remember being snowed on in August...

Edinburgh is a beautiful city; lots to do, see and visit. Glasgow's got a lot to offer too - apparently. As for the Highlands, well, I'm biased, as that's where I originate from. I wouldn't want to single anywhere out as somewhere to visit; it depends on whether you want to do the tourist route - up Loch Lomond, over to Ben Nevis, up and across to Loch Ness - or more off the beaten track. I come from a bit further North than that, on the West Coast - in my opinion, far prettier than the East.

If you go to the Highlands, though, you'll definitely have to have a car. You can't get to many worthwhile places by public transport.

Don't get defensive. Some of use questioned your wishes, but reading the thread again, no-one called you stupid, until you lost your cool with this comment:

HaHa! The English are always baffled by the celtic wish to distance themselves from english culture. They think its so great but we just find it embarrasing to be associated.
I also see no signs of bigotry either. The only bigotry I saw was from you.

Unfortunately for you and the good people of the Republic of Cornwall to gain independence (and I am beginning to think isolation would be good for your people), you will have to convince the British government with sound, intelligent arguments.

Which may mean a trip to *gulp England...

The reason I object to Cornwall being independant is the same reason I object to Northumberland being independant or Sussex being independant. I think we're all better off together, rather than going it alone because of some kind of irrational regional pride. I mean pride in the negative sense, in the 'we don't need you lot' sense.

I can't see it on Multimap - Nearest I've come to it was spending three months restoring the otter path on Raasay - Which was also glorious.

Lets add yet another layer of bureaucracy to our already bloated system of government. We've been stripping local councils of their power for a long time, to only add another layer. That is just stupid. We don't need more politicians - the ones that we already have are completely ****e.

(Sorry to get back on topic!)

Personally, I'd rather adopt new regional assemblies and drop local councils. They really are a bunch of beurecratic wasters.
Everything I say is either loose interpretation of dubious facts or idle speculation rooted in irrational sentiment.

Thats not really necessary since almost the entire border runs along the river Tamar.

We just have to destroy a few bridges!

Well you won't mind when all the multinationals (if there are any!!) move out, when you no longer get any goods from anywhere because you blew up the bridges (and any that do get there would be 10x the price because of the logistic problems and the fact you have **** all purchasing power), when you get Iraq nuking the bejesus out of you because you ain't got any kind of defense whatsoever (they desperatly want to hurt Britain, they don't care if you don't see yourself as part of it) and when your tourism industry completely dies because nobody can get there without a lot of hassle.

Yeah, fan-****ing-tastic idea sunshine, rock on that man, give the dude a medal.

Shhhh - don't let the antipodeans hear you say that.

Applecross is great - one of the most stunning approaches you could ask for. The new coast road's gorgeous, but not a patch on coming over Bealach Na Bá. I've always loved that sign:
This road rises to a height of 2053 Ft. with gradients of 1 in 5 and hairpin bends.
NOT ADVISED FOR LEARNER DRIVERS, VERY LARGE VEHICLES OR CARAVANS.
ROAD NORMALLY IMPASSABLE IN WINTRY CONDITIONS
Fills you with confidence, does that...

yeah, i been over it when the fog was as thick as pea soup. Loads of fun.

My dad was crossing last year with his brother, who was driving in big boots, and he hits the accelerator instead of the break on the approach to a hairpin, absolutley ****e himself!

I had a hairy moment a few Christmases back. Got caught in a blizzard while we were stopped at the top and had to slither all the way down the hairpin stretch. Feck me it was nervy.
