HDD Recommendations

Having read a few posts on related subjects, I thought I'd poll some opinions. Just over a year ago I bought a PC from a company who shall remain nameless.

OK. Maybe they won't. It was Tiny. The Bar Stewards. Thirteen months on and just out of warranty, my Fujitsu HDD breaks. So I need a new one.

What do people consider the best HDDs and where do I buy them? I'd want at least an 'as-good-as' replacement, meaning at least 40GB in size.

Also, it has an AMD Athlon 1.2 GHz processor in it. Is that socket compatible with the new AMD XP processors? (Info on where these can be bought would also be appreciated!)

I bought a noname one that actually turned out to be a Samsung HDD (40gb) and I'm very pleased with it. It's fast and makes no noise whatsoever.

I officially join the maxtor crowd and no wonder your hard drive broke down, its fujitsu. I had a fujistu hard drive and it broke down in no time too. The XP athlons are not compatable with your athlon proscesser, nor mine. I bought my computer about 2 months before the XP line came out. oh well.

Everyone else seems to like Maxtor. I typically get Western Digital hard drives. I only ever remember having one Maxtor hard drive, and it, too, performed admirably.

The socket is compatible with AthlonXP's, but the motherboard itself might not be.

Try dabs. I get most of my stuff from them.

To find the cheapest prices have a look at PCIndex. They find the cheapest prices from the main UK computer companies.

I'm happy with WD or IBM for IDE, Seagate for SCSI.

Would not trust IBM as their drives have a tendency to overheat and are not recommended to be powered on for more than 8 hours a day.

Yes, the Athlon 1.2 uses Socket A which is exactly what Athlon XP uses....

Please learn jack crap about computers before you comment, Gandalf...

I have been using westen Digitals for years. When I upgraded to larger disks, I put my old ones into a second system, and the ones from the second system into systems for my girl friend's gradn children.

So far no problems.

After the original problem...at the top there..... I bought a Maxtor 6L060J3 60 GB HD. It was fine until three days ago, went it started crashing all over the shop.

So now I'm thinking something else in my system is the cause...two HD hardware crashes ... in relatively close proximity....doesn't usually happen....

As far as I can see, likely candidates are:

* processor overheating (I can check the fan I suppose)
* power supply is not rated high enough (can I check this?)

Anyone else have other opinions / explanations?

just DONT use IBM HDDs, those suck, i alredy got one dead and with 50GBs on it (max 60) this SUX! ... the other one's alredy giving strange sounds out of it and i'm not sure how long it will continue running. a friend of mine has alredy lost 2 HDDs from IBM

so if someone from the IBM-HDD section is reading this: STOP PRODUCING HDDs SINCE UR NOT CAPABLE OF GETTING THEM RUNNING CORRECTLY! (or start paying for the damages ... i'd say that we should apply double of the costs for a recovery, that means 'bout 1000$/GB, in my case there were 50gigs on it )
