What do you think of my new PC specs?
That time has come, and I need a new computer.
Sooo....any recommendations for hardware? I want this to be just under the premium, so I'm not paying a huge amount (i.e. about 1.8ghz or so, with maybe one of the new GeForce cards, or a Radeon 8500?).
Edit: Changed title to be more obvious

LOL
Okay, after a couple of hours' deliberation with Simon (chenko), we have the following list (prices ex. VAT):
Abit KR7a RAID (non-ATA133) @ £100
AMD Athlon XP-1800 @ £100
Thermalright AX7 heatsink @ £30
YS-TECH FD8125 3pin fan @ £3
80mm fan guards @ £0.76
Arctic Silver III @ £5
Chieftech Scorpio TX-10BLD (blue with extra cooling vents) @ £75
ATI Radeon 8500 OEM @ £128
512mb DDR @ £131
(the Radeon will be unlocked to retail speed)
Total cost: ~£573
Total inc VAT: ~£673
All except the memory comes from overclockers.co.uk, and the memory comes from Crucial.

Some people have told me they don't think a fat penguin really embodies the grace of Linux, which just tells me they have never seen a angry penguin charging at them in excess of 100mph. They'd be a lot more careful about what they say if they had.

You might want to get a hard drive and MAYBE a CD-ROM drive, maybe a floppy because you know they are coming in fashion!
All contents of the above post that aren't somebody elses are mine, not the property of some media corporation.

nice specs Parksie, don't listen to Justin..
but if you plan on running any kind of game I wouldn't get RAID. it will make the games run a lot slower.

No backup unit.........
Maxtor hard drives suck....mainly cause l can't get mine to work
On the case front, go full tower, with mega power unit. You will find it should be cheaper to purchase a case with power unit installed, than to buy them separatly...
Looks like l might have to build a system as well....friggin outdated BIOS.....

well its not a full tower, it would be an extra 60£ for a full tower (like mine muwahahah ), which would be monsterous, the case specified is large enough as it is, and already has a PSU in it

everyone has good and bad luck with drives, from what I've seen, Maxtors seem to be the ones that the fewest people are cursing at

yea, the antecs' PSU's are better, thou, i didnt want to go to another site to pay extra for a case, and also pay more money in delivery charges, as the Chieftech is basically the same its not really worth it
oh, and my Antec power supplies fan is fluffed, its running at 1/4 of its expected speed :/

For whoever mentioned it - I'm ripping these out of my computer:
Sound card
Both monitors
FDD
Both HDDs, possibly getting another one
DVD drive, might buy a combo DVD/CDRW and sell that, or just get a CDRW to add to it.
Shuttle AK35GTR - what's the main differences?

OK nm, it's basically identical to the KR7a, right down to the chipset, RAID setup, and IDE controller

Yep, thats why I rarely or never recommend an Abit board... $150 and you don't even get onboard sound...
Maybe it'll be, big whoop, 0.5% faster, you'll notice the $50 in your pocket a lot more

Did I also mention the shuttle board has a C-Media audio chip onboard, so it should be better than AC97
I don't know if it's C-Media..but it's better than AC97

Nope
It's one of the components I'm keeping - got it for £20 in an anti-static bag at a computer fair when they were still being sold boxed for £50

I think we get tax on most things
Although fuel tax is ridiculous, it's about 85% or something!

It's a great board and I'm not trashing your decision, and the Shuttle I have heard is not available in UK, it's good just a little pricey
