Why won't my USB ports work?
On my other PC, there are 2 USB ports - these have never been used. (I just got the PC). I need to connect a CD-Burner to the USB port to copy some stuff off the HD.
Initially, I had to install Win98, cause Win95 didn't like the USB interface. Then I had to modify the BIOS to let it recognise the USB ports. I think there were two settings, one for general USB availability, and one for DOS USB availability...
I did all this, and then I get msgs in Windows System settings that say the device (CD-Burner) is installed properly, but the signal isn't getting there or something, and to check the internal cabling...
I did that, which cause my other problem...
Help!

Well you said the USB ports aren't integrated onto the board, that means it must be an earlier pentium II. So not a 440BX.
I don't see how it's relevant anyway scoutt.
I don't think we can really help you until the video card/board issue is resolved.

becasue if it is VIA then that is the problem with USB. VIA had real problems running USB. most of the time it didn't work, intergrated or not.

It says Pentium II on something "With MMX Technology" if that means anything to you...
And I confirmed that the USB thing is external to the main board. It has parallel cabling connecting it to a port on the main board.
There are 4 input thingies on the USB card too, as I said.

Is it a PCI card or just a bracket?

I think it's just a bracket, if that means its not plugged in to the main board at all... ?
I have tried it with all possible USB combos in the BIOS. I am trying again right now actually...

Bracket, I see..
Well if you have any local computer shops see if they sell any USB 1.1 or preferably USB 2.0 add in PCI cards, that could solve your problem.

If it's gonna cost me, I might just pull the HD, and put it temporarily in me other PC to burn the CD.
Cheers.

more than likely it won't run 2.0 as old as it is.
if everything in the BIOS is set right and the cables are connected right, and it still doesn't work, get a new usb port or forget about it. not much to do if it won't work. I mean not much to check to figure it out why it won't work.
you could try to uninstall teh usb drivers in windows. make sure you do it in safe mode that way it will grab all the driver for it. just go into device manager and delete the usb root hub and anything else you see as usb. then restart. if it sees it then make sure you have the 98 disk. and hopefully it works correctly.
