Holy #@%!*#@&!
You'd think something so *very* common (so far as over-the-counter apps are concerned) would have been given more attention in the grand scheme of VB, eh?
Is this really the easiest way to do this?
Oh---wait--let me guess...... .NET has it all worked out (I've heard that .NET can part large bodies of water and turn lead into gold)
I have to implement this desktop-icon-during-install thing within the next 8 hours, and after an already 19-hour programming stint, this stuff is just crossing my eyes.
Very much appreciate the code offering, though, Peet. It's helped some of us get *much* farther along than we would have been otherwise.
But on an off chance, does anyone know of some super-secret quick(er)-fix that they'd be willing to expose? I could offer some cheese or beer or something.
Is the API stuff really that hard? Haven't tried it-----everything I read makes it sound like neurosurgery.
Cheers!

Even neurosurgery gets easy after you have done it enough! APIs are not nearly as mysterious as they first appear.

(This is cheating a bit!)
The easiest way to it if you are running on a network and you want to install shortcuts locally is:
Create a original shortcut on a network drive an have your VB app simply copy and paste it to your local machine.
I said it was cheating!
