Very Disturbing PC problem
Hi!
It would be very kind of you if you could help me with a very disturbing PC-problem.
Here's the problem:
Since yesterday, every time I start my computer and it goes into windows, it starts to load usual things as cd-recorder, sound, etc. but in the middle of this loading process, the computer starts to scan A: for something, the lamp is lit and it gives that disturbing sound, after 20-30 seconds, it quits scanning and goes on with loading other things, as zonealarm etc. I haven't done any special things on the computer lately, just counterstrike and programming.....strange!
Could anyone help me solve this problem?
Thanks in advance!
best regards,
Alex

Disturbing meaning irregular from normal a drive sounds? If so then it might be busted or becoming so. But if you are more concerned with why it is scanning on start-up I suggest you see if your win.ini start-up folder and registry have any thing that is looking for a file on the A drive. Another possiblity is that you have Mcfee AntiVirus If I recall it scans your A: on start -up or mabye shut doed dont quite remeber. Anyway that my 2 cents

thanks for the reply!
I just reinstalled windows and the problem disappeared, it's a bit longer loading time when window starts, but I'm ok with that.

With or without OS load problems, it is a good idea to run msconfig, a utility supplied with Windows 9x (it is not always installed, but you can add it to your system if you have the install CD).
This utility will give you a list of every application which is invoked when Windows 9x loads. A lot of the stuff is unnecessary, and should be gotten rid of.
If you do Ctl-Alt-Delete (just tap once), you will get a list of everything running. A Google search for those programs will tell you which are required.
Some systems have a lot of unnecessary applications running and using resources.

sometimes if you have used files on the A: drive then they will go into your recent documents. Windows will then try to find them again when you restart it so it's a good idea to clear that everytime if you've used floppies.
