i've been in it for half a year

I started it at work about 18 months ago using 4 in my lunch break.

Now i'm teaching myself using VB 6 pro, and I think the hardest bit in the programming cycle is thinking of an idea in the first place!

At age 10 or 11 I got a new PC (333 mhz 64 mb etc. im still usint it right now)
Screwed the computer UP BAD at 12 (POCK YOU STUPID VIRUS WRITERS)
A NEIGHBOR (A VB PROGRAMMER) Helped me fix the PC
In the process he realized that i loved computers and pcs or maybe my mom told him, anyways he gave me a VB compiler, I got a book from a friend of my moms. At age 12 I was making

I started programming on a Commodore 64 and a Mac IIe using BASIC. Pretty cool stuff...

I then found QBASIC in DOS and went like a rocket learning pretty much everything there is to know about DOS-based BASIC programming.

I went to a computer-carnival thing one day and some guy told me that I could use a program called "Visual Basic" to make Windows programs! WOW! I quickly got my hands on a copy and have been programming in VB ever since.

I am 16 now, so that means about 5 years of VB programming. I can do pretty much anything, including ActiveX stuff, API calls, file functions, registry stuff, INI stuff, custom titlebars on windows etc.

I'm currently writing a program called 'Harbinger' which KICKS ASS over ICQ, MSN Messenger, AIM, Yahoo Messenger etc. Keep in touch and I'll post how it's going...

I started programming when I was about 12-13 on a Commodore 64 and carried on for a while at school with BBC micros.

I then didn't do any programming till after I left University and got a job at the age of 25. I'm now 28 so I have been programming for about 3 full years now at work in a variety of languages, but mainly VB over the last 2 years.

At 30 I'm probably the oldest person here ( so far ). I've been programming commercially for 10 years using 4GL's and relational d/b's. Before that it was Amiga, C64, ZX81 in that order so the total is about 16 years. VB about 4 years.

I am 13 years old, I started programming when I was 12 I think that was about January '99 I wrote simple app's but NO hello world applications, I basicly tought my self visual basic....
well not alot.. but the basics, like if..then... statements, and message boxes and input boxes and how to use 3rd party activex controls.. and stuff like that.

but when i started getting into loops and select case things I had to start reading about visual basic on the internet and in books.

and I learned alot in that one year I started in VB6 learning edition, when I got good enough(good enough to want to use winsock) I bough VB6 enterprise edition.
etc etc... and here I am today I still suck, but not as much as I used to....

I guess I've been doing this tooo long. (longer than some of you have been alive)

I started out on a Vic 20, it could make really cool bird sounds when I typed in code, which drove my cats crazy. Got into programming more in High school, and then took it in college. C, C++, QBasic, Java, MFC :-(, and VB. My first job was programming in VBA, which was sort of neat.

But it has been 13 years since I first started. I'm 25 and when I hear/see/read that some of you are 12, 13, etc., it makes me feel really dumb as you are a lot better than me in a lot less time.

I guess I started out programming in Basic on a TRS-80 modella III, It had dual 5.25" floppy drives, and you had to use one of them to boot from a system disk. On that, basic was more like a secondary operating system then a language.

I would copy the simplistic programs out of the back of my math books and modify them. Nothing too big.

I started doing ascii animated pictures on it, and I envisioned writing a whole program based on these ascii drawings.

This was back in '88... I had done some programming before this, but I never really got into it.

I ended up spending 100$ on a Commodore 64, and a small black and white tv. That's when I found out about sprites. That was pretty cool. The books that used to come with comptuers would have tons of information about programming, etc... I mean nowadays the books tell you how to click the mouse. These computers didn't even have mice.

Anyways... What was the question? oh yeah... I've been programming since '86-87 sometime... I guess 14 years.

I got into it pretty young. Was running with the wrong kind of kids, fell into peer pressure. Everybody was doing it. LOL. Just kidding.

Anyways... I've come a long way... I'm now pretty familiar with C/C++, Basic, and Pascal. Those are probably my three strongest languages, Visual Basic is getting up there assuming I can master some of these API calls, and get these window hooks under control.

I've had some experience with quite a few languages. The next language I want to learn is perl or PHP.

I did at one time want to write assembly programs for Nintendo emulators (for fun)... Maybe do a take off of the Final Fantasy series or something.
Hmm... Anyone here interested in something like that?

I Started Tinkering in Various Forms of BASIC when I was about 12, Started playing with VB3 when I was 13, Got Bored with it a year later in favour of Drinking and other valuable uses of my Time.

I Got a Job About a Year ago after I left School, They taught me VB6 Pretty much from scratch because I'd not been Programming for so long, Then I went Back to uni and Taught Myself Properly instead of going to lectures.

I think it's pretty cool that there's 13 old programmers out there. I'm 24 and can't imagine where I'd be if I started at 13.

I started programming in a grade 12 C++ class in 1995. From there moved on to College for more C then to VB 4 and VB 5. Since then, had a few lame Web Design jobs and a little over a year ago landed my current job programming in Visual FoxPro 3.0. Since being at my present job I've converted our major file tracking system from FoxPro to a VB 6 front end and several smaller VB 6 databases. FoxPro Sucks!!!

I got my first job programming when I was 17, now I'm 23. I started programming when I was about 9 on a VIC20 (it rocked!!) Ahh the good old days of hard core BASIC.

It all depends on how fast you pick up the language you want to learn and how much experience the company demands. Some companies don't care how much exp. you have in a language, if you need to learn it they'll most often train you, buy you books, and give you a learning period to get a handle on the language. This is how I got introduced to VB.

I started programming about 5 years ago in TP...from then till now I've now leaned the basic and some slight advanced features of C, BC++, VC++, Java, and VB.

I made a fully functioning turn based stategy game in Pascal after a year of starting and made a simple VB rpg two yeras later. (The first game almost had me kicked out of class because my instructor though I brought a game into class...when he found out that I wrote it he was quite impressed)

As for my first official job, I had every programers worst nightmare. I had to modify and upgrade poorly documented code that didn't follow any known coding conventions. It was a large program too.

lets see then i started programming Basic when i was 10 in 94 and i am still programming but now i am trying the newer languages like Java. moved from basic to VB 1 year ago or there abouts.

Well, just like thje rets of you i started on computers quite young. I did som of the noddy programming bollox that everyone does, biut then did not go near programming for years.

so realisticallty, i have been programming fot 5 years. of which i have been doing VB for 8 monthd.


Thet thing is, i think it is a bad idez to sit in fronyt of your cpmputer all the toime. Take me as a bas example. I have jusy now got back from the pub, and wwht is the firt thgin i do when i gewt home? I get on hear and start talkning philospical crap to you lot.


So if yo can read / understand any of thsi then take ewen blair as you r example. Live for the weekeend. once you start wotkknig you will apprectiate them.

How many years would be suggested to try to get a programming job?

I say as soon as you can, you can always learn whilst you're at work. Usually when you work for say a software house you tend to specialise in one or two languages, but often get shoved into a project where you have to very quickly learn a new language.

It's not really showing what you can do when you get your first job, more like showing how quickly you can pick new stuff up.
