Unfair Post Counts
I know the admins have alot of work already but I had a small idea.
There should be an option when posting that allows a user to select a "non-increment" post that doesn't add to the post count. It would be very handy for when a person has recieved a post that fixes a problem and wants to post a "thanks" without adding (unfairly) to his or her post count. That way it is possible to says thanks without unfairly increasing your count.

Oh teacher, you forgot to give us homework...
I don't think people that pay attention to post counts will feel guilty about tacking another on.

All post counts measure is the number of times you have posted. Nothing more.
A huge post count could mean that you have given a lot of valuable advice to people. Or it could mean you have just been around for ages, have nothing better to do, and post a lot of junk!
If somebody gets in an argument (sorry, heated discussion) and they fall back on "I've got more posts than you", I look upon it as childishness.
If we need a measuring stick to judge seniority and guruism, it should be from the quality of the posts - not the number. The best programmer in the world could join tomorrow and have a post count of zero. There is also no way to measure if a post was a question or a response.
If we DO want a formal system of seniority (which I question), then it should be something like a count of the 'you solved my problem' responses. Perhaps a button a thread-starter could press (once per thread) on a certain message. It would of course need changes to the forum software and would be open to abuse (we have already had people talking to themselves with different identities on this forum), so it's probably impractical.
Yes, post counts are fun - and I must admit I did get some satisfaction from seeing mine click over from 499 to 500 - but they have no real substance.

I agree with BrianHawley. The post count is just a meaningless statistic and attaching any kind of meaning to it is pointless.
