Question Installing VS NET... a little help please

I was recently handed a copy of VS NET to take for a test drive, and the first thing that has to be installed are the Windows components. The only one which I can't get installed is the Microsoft .NET Framework.

When I launched the executable manually, it says "Program too big to fit in memory". Haven't seen that error message in many many years. I've got 512 DDR on this machine, so what gives?

I've also tried in Safe Mode (don't ask me why) and that was a no go as well. Anyone know what I can do here to get the framework installed?

    Thanks,
    - Cam

Dont try to install it manually, put the first cd in and then take it from there.

Sorry... should've mentioned that. I tried it from the installer and then went on to the readme which tells you to run it manually in case the component(s) won't install.

    Thanks for the quick reply,

Have you tried to download the framework seperate by itself and run that to see if it installs? If so your in business. If not, there is something else wrong. Something with the OS perhaps.

Do what kleptos said then what I suggest doing is:

Insert Visual Studio .NET CD1 or DVD.
Close any programs triggered by autorun.
Choose Start Menu, and then Run, and then type the following:
    n:\setup\Setup.exe /NO_BSLN_CHECK

    For example:
    D:\setup\setup.exe /NO_BSLN_CHECK

Thanks guys, but I tried running the setup with "/NO_BSLN_CHECK" and it's STILL trying to install the components.

Kleptos, you mentioned I should try downloading the framework... I'm currently searching Microsoft's site for the download, and it may just be that it's late in the day and that I'm tired, but I can't find it anywhere.

Any pointers as to where I can find it?

    Thanks again,

Well, I downloaded the framework and installed it, and VS NET's installer STILL wants to install it.

I was not meant to have VS NET. The VS gods are not smiling upon me...

The windows component cd still tries to install the framework and it fails huh? Hmmm, is this a beta copy or the final? Do you have IIS installed in XP and are you logged on with an admin account? Im just asking to see what else could be wrong...

To answer a couple of questions...

    - Yes, it's a final copy

    - No, I do not have IIS installed. But it's my understanding that it's not required.

    - Yes, I am logged in as an admin

Thanks for continuing to look into this,
    - Cam

Your right about the IIS part, i was just checking to see if it was installed, but here at work i dont have IIS and the framework installed fine. When you installed the framework from the seperate file, did it install correctly? (the d/l'ed one)

The downloaded one installed fine from what I can tell. There weren't any error messages or anything, and the shortcuts are there under the Start button.

Who knows... maybe an updated version of the installer will be released. But I think in the meantime I'll have to pass the testing of VS NET onto someone else in the group here at work, and hope that eventually I can have it installed and working so I can see firsthand what it's all about.

It's too bad, I was really looking forward to this. For now I'll stick with VS 6.0, she's been a trusty friend for many years

    Thanks again,
    - Cam

    Hi CAM,

Do you have a copy of a previous Beta Version of Windows Component installed before ? Any previous version must be uninstalled ! Go to Add/Remove Programs to find out.

IE 6 is recommeded altho that comes with your WinXPPRo

If I were you and I am desperate to install .NET Framework, I will reinstall the OS again. Your installation of the first OS might not have been done well in regards in allocation of the memory. Anyways, I know its a chore and just a wild guess, at best.

    Best of Luck !
