png is good for massive screenshots I find. Compression is much better than either gif or jpeg in those circumstances

I, personally, am getting attached to PNGs... For the longest time I used JPEG for all my web graphics, then I just decided to see what this new PNG format was that I was seeing on sites, so I saved one of my JPEG screenshots, which was like 60kb and kinda crappy looking in the PNG format, and it was like 10kb, with way better quality. Now I use PNG as much as possible except for photographic images.

possibly because their compression algorithm is patented and you have to pay to have your program create them?

PNG's are good because they use lossless conpression. But do they work in every browser like gif's and jpeg's do? If so, they are definitely my favorite.
JPEG's are good for large images. Their only problem is the compression is lossy and the image can get fuzzy.
GIF's are great for smaller images because they come in crystal clear. They're only limited to 256 colors, though, so they aren't really my favorite.
