Windows 2000 Crash Report Log
This thread is the project
Despite the Hype Windows XP and Windows 2000 crash on me quite regularly and I want to know - is this common and what types of things bring these OSs down or make systems unreliable (so that I can avoid them). This thread is essentially phenomenological - I'm not expecting massive debug files just pithy explainations so we can all see if there are any trend and try to make VB apps work better.
So every time Windows 2000 crashes on you just post to this thread and say what happened - only post if you have a crash or lock-out - one post per incident

I have trouble with (I think) Microsoft's mouse drivers and Windows 2000. My computer has been locking up every couple days since I bought their USB track ball.

Thanks Scott - that sounds terrible - normally I've just found that I can't find a working driver rather than it crashing the system - interesting.

what drivers are you using? 'cause if your system is locking up (like mine) that usually means naughty drivers. Application level software might blow up or hang, but shouldn't be capable to locking up Windows. (I know, I said shouldn't
I've got a Microsoft USB mouse, Plextor CDR, an Iomega zip drive, Promise IDE card a USB camera and Dell integrated sound card and video...

Scott - I can't see any clashes or problems showing in the device manager. What is the best way to get a print out of drivers? This is what the device manage printout says
Selected Resource Report - Page: 1

Class: Universal Serial Bus controllers

No resources used.

The .SB Direct Connect is a relatively new device - crashes were occuring before that was in.

Sorry, I wish I knew.
I don't have much experience troubleshooting devices that, for the most part, are working properly.

Is it still doing it? I had the same problem with 2k. Turned out to be that bloody BadTrans virus.
At least I think it was, I knew I'd picked it up and after a reformat the problem went away.

I think it was the fax sender on my new HP Office but I'm not sure. I've removed the driver for that and all my memery resident things such as PGP and Real (except norton) and it seems to have settled down. Norton seems to grab BadTrans without problems so its not that.

Two Windows 2000 crashes on two separate machines since last reporting.
Currently this machine freezes for 2-3 second intervals often a few times per minute. No new hardware - Norton Antivirus reports no problems.

Four additional crashes since last time. I've now taken to actually turning my computer off sometimes! No systematic pattern as to what is causing crashes

How often do you defrag? Remember, since Win2k is based off of the NT kernel, it fragments a LOT more then 9x, and you have to defrag MUCH more often (this is a possible source of problems). I would also go and hunt down win2k drivers for every piece of hardware that you can. You could also try re-installing windows. Norton might also be causing problems, but who knows.
My own system usually goes for weeks at a time, and usually only goes down when I restart it myself. I have had no problems at all for months.

Good question! I used to have my systems defrag weekly (and still had losts of W2K & XP problems) but with the problems with IBM hard disk drives http://www.theinquirer.net/08030205.htm I've not left the machines on to attend to themselves. I'm just running the fragmentation analyser now.

Yes I've been systematically doing that (and removing hardware)

speaking of crashing.
our systems at work
Compaq - 1gig win2k machines with our own ghost image of win2k sp2.
if you goto start -> setings -> printers and if you have the arrow goto a printer and rigth click on that menu, instant freeze.
if you don't have that menu just right click on printers and you get an instant freeze.
jsut one of the way to feeeze win2k.

I have Windows XP running for 4 month now. Haven't got any crash eversince!
One thing that does occur is that explorer eats my memory away like cookies! (thought of that expression my self ) But when I close it and reopen it with taskmanager everything is fine again!
And a problem with Unreal Tournament. When I try to run it for the second time my sound completely freaks out!
Oh yeah and every now and then my keyboard layout is suddenly changed to something different so that the only keys that are in the right place are the characters!

In that case you have the wrong keyboard set up - go in to control panel and change it. living in the UK i see this quite often, as US is the default - apparently it's all a bit different!

Monday Morning Lunatic
I installed the InstallShield evaluation, and every time I run it I get a KMODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED blue screen.
Win2K SP2 with all the patches.
I refuse to tie my hands behind my back and hear somebody say "Bend Over, Boy, Because You Have It Coming To You".

Good Ol' Platypus
Installed Nimo's Codec Pack (win2k Pro)
- WiMP now sounds great
- Winamp doesn't work
- Install Winamp v2.80b, works again, both that and WiMP
- MSN Messanger stops working.
Everytime I try to talk to someone, it takes up around 128megs of my memory and halts my system at 100% CPU usage.

A couple of things u out to know for you ppl with WXP/W2K crashing.
Norton Antivirus 2001 DOES NOT WORK WITH XP AT ALL! You need 2002.
Any version of winamp below 2.8 will not work properly with WXP.
MS Office '97 has problems with W2K and XP - mainly printer and user accessibility.
Oh for a very good source of drivers
DriverGuide.com
User Name: driver
Password: all
IN WXP DONT FORCE "svhost" TO END, XP WILL HANG
Symantec WinFAX Pro v10 causes Outlook XP to crash on a regular basis. Uninstallation of WinFAX will remedy the problem.
Oh if your having major problems, try to get rid of all the beta/demos/trial software. I have found many times that this type of software can cause lots of problems.
Any other troubleshooting probs send me an email @ [email protected] and i'll see if i can help
